Many times those service books don't backup or restore. I wouldn't bank on them. You may be ok but I'd be careful.

Well I hopefully wont have to back up until 4.3 comes out...and if all else fails...I will just add the data plan for a day again.

This thread addresses exactly the issue I have been facing since I got my 8320 last Friday. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

I dont want a BB or any other data plan - I just wish to use my device for data access over WiFi hotspots. Specifically I wish to use:
1. Google Maps
2. Gmail apps
3. Other Google apps as they become available
4. An IMAP and POP3 email client I can use to read my mail

Based on Pinman's posts, I am going to try the activate-the-data-plan-for-a-day method. BTW thanks a bunch Pinman for your dedication and Lunkhead for your tips.

Two questions:
1. What exactly are service books and why are they so difficult to manage, procure etc? (As you can probably tell, I am a first time BB user)
2. Does anybody know of a IMAP and/or POP3 email client that will work over the WiFi?

So those of you on T-mobile what is the specific service book that you have that is enabling all your apps to use wi-fi??

I am curious to see what other people have for service books and their own results with their applications.

It would be interesting for all that have some apps working on Wi-Fi ONLY to post the list of your Service Books installed on your device. Similar to what camo80 did.

If you add a cheap $5 generic data plan, WiFi works on the 8320.

For more information on how to use 3rd party Internet software on a BlackBerry without a BlackBerry plan, see my sticky in the "BlackBerry Network" forum.

You are missing the point here.

People purchased the Wi-Fi phones for a reason and a reason only - FREE USAGE WHILE ON WI-FI.

Even if you are completelly right about the cheap data plan, this exercise is to figure out a way of using as many applications as possible for free while connected to a wireless network.

And FYI, Fido and Rogers are about to release new versions of their data plans for even cheaper than they are now. Looks like Canada is finally getting some affordable data plans.

even though u have mobile off were you on UMA ? I have noticed that if you are on UMA then these things work as your handset can establish the connection with the carriers server.

Exactly my point.While on wi-fi The phone apps should connect to their destination even without the carrier knowing about it. hope BB realizes this and fixes it in the later OSs'

Mark Rejhon was simply pointing out another method of getting data to work without the BB Data plan....

Anyone else have application working or not working updates??

Yes I have an update. Following Pinman and other instructions to activate the BB data plan and then de-activate worked for a couple of days and now I am back to the Gmail and Google Maps apps not working.

They complain about not finding a working data connection. Of course, Opera, LogicMail (an open source POP and IMPA email client) and the Blackberry browser work fine. I have the BB Feature Enabler turned on.

Any clues? Did T-Mobile restore the Service Books to some other state? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Odd.... You have LogicMail working?? I could not / still can't get it working... My Gmail and others are working like a champ....

This is all new to many of us and I was able to get Pinman up and working after he added the data plan for a day to get the books...

Have you tried a hard reboot (pull battery for 30 sec) and register on Host Routing Table?

If you are having issue you might try the steps I listed for Pinman earlier in this thread...

...that means that the connection is using your TCP (APN) and not BIS-B - look under the 'socket' and 'ssl' sections in the API doc and 'deviceside' setting then read line #151 of the LogicMail code linked above.

It may not make sense at first, but if you're using SSL in LogicMail then another setting on your device controls whether or not it tries to go through your carrier - read that API doc section on "tls or ssl" and the comments below the method description.

The setting on your device which controls that is Options -> Security -> TLS. The out of the box default is 'Proxy', but I keep mine set to 'Handheld' instead to get a direct end-to-end connection with my remote server. This setting might be why some people can get LogicMail working and some can't without a data plan... (a guess on my part, you need to be using SSL)

I did not do anything specific to get LogicMail to work. It worked right off the bat. BTW my TLS setting is Proxy - I never changed it to Handheld.

As for the Google apps, I checked the WiFi entry is set to WiFi[60], re-registered, pulled the battery for 30 seconds and still no cigar with Gmail and Google Maps. Its a little perplexing why we are encountering different behavior from the same device and service provider.

Thanks for the follow up - I am just going to keep my fingers crossed for now that something fixes itself.

For what it's worth, I have tested all of the following skype/voip offerings, and all require a data connection (or won't work with just wifi):

IM+ for Skype
Webmessenger for Skype
Gizmo (J2ME version)
iSkoot

Very disappointing. Wifi isn't much good to me without a way to free myself from Robbers' gougorama.

Never had a data plan (unless email only counts) and my BBmessenger has always worked, even with new OS download, service books pushed, reboots, etc. What I did discover is that without a data plan, certain service books can not be sent to you, even if you had them with the original OS. In my case, AIM. I can probably do as you suggested and add the data plan, but it's not that deep for me to have AIM.

No. Fido doesnt have UMA on their network. For those that can get Gmail working with wi-fi only, I assume you are on the T-Mobile network. They provide UMA and a feature enabler program it seems. Those who can get most of their programs to work on wi-fi seems to be on T-Mobile. People on other carriers cannot seem to get very many programs to use wifi
