Default BBM trackball and enter key not working

Please Login to Remove!

I have a Pearl on Verizon (8130)
BBM: 5.0.0.57
OS: 4.5.0.175

Through messenger, I can compose and send PIN messages, email & sms. I can make phone calls. In short everything works as expected EXCEPT:

When I am using BBM, trackball presses and the enter key don't work as expected. For example, from BBM main screen, I can press the menu key and the menu pops up. I can scroll to (e.g.) "Options". When I press the trackball, it ignores me. When I hit the enter key, it ignores me. The menu stays open but the "Options" sub menu does not open.

Another example:

When I am on the BBM main screen I can scroll down to "Chats", click the trackball and I see all my chats (crazy, but it works here). However, scrolling to a chat and then hitting the trackball or the enter key results in BBM ignoring me. The cursor stays on the chat, but it does not open.

Effectively, I cannot use BBM.

If I pull the battery, it will work correctly for a bit and then restart the same behaviour. Maybe 10 minutes, maybe two hours.

Any ideas?

A few thoughts, it seems like a software issue. I would downgrade to a lower BBM. If still no success, I would wipe the device and reinstall the OS. In addition, remove the media card and see how the phone operates without any unneeded software. My response parallels theringer
