Default Getting wap.cingular added to my account- a tale of persistence

Please Login to Remove!

Just thought I would share my experience getting wap.cingular added to my account so I can use Ramble.

When I first got my BB I set it up to use Ramble. I followed the directions found in this forum and it worked perfectly right out of the gate. I get my first cingular bill and I see I'm getting charged "pay per use". I go to my local cingular store and tell them I'm on the unlimited plan and shouldn't be charged "pay per use" for anything. They do something to my account to "fix" it and then credit the charges.

I then go to use Ramble later that day, and guess what? It doesn't work. I got the dreaded tunnel error. My local cingular store is a joke and no one there knows anything about BB or data services so I take my chances with cingular phone support.

I end up calling the data services line at 866-490-2666. Now the fun begins.

The first guy is trying to tell me I don't need wap.cingular, but some blackberry.net something or other. I try to tell him I know what I'm talking about and to just add wap.cingular to my account, but he insists he know's what he's talking about. He gets hung up on.

I immediately call back. I get this other guy that says I can get wap.cingular but it will cost me. He gets hung up on.

I call back again once again and finally get someone who seems to have been through this before. He does ask me why I want wap.cingular added to my account (which I thought was strange). He transfers me to some woman who does know what she's doing and sets up my wap.cingular account. She also asks why I want it added to my account.

If others are having issues just keep calling back until you get someone who has a clue. It seem cingular doesn't train their people very well. I am not impressed.

Wirelessly posted (Cingular-Blue 7290: BlackBerry7290/4.0.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

Did you tell them outright that you wanted it for thrid-party apps like IM, etc.? What was their reaction/response?

I checked my Cingular-Blue billing this week. We're different than Cingular-Orange, but I found no data charges for RambleIM and Google-local/gmaps usages!

Well after speaking to a few Orange CSRs, they all said that the use wap.cingular is not free and the only things that is unlimited is going through the BB APN. Any use of Cingular APN will incure additional costs. It is getting further investigation as some are getting charged and other are not. I know I used my Orange SIM in a V3 and use the medianet access to go to some sites (thinking that it would be free based on BB unlimited) and i was not charged (hoepfully it will not apear in the next billing cycle. if I don't then hopefully it stays this way

Steve,

I did tell them it was for Instant Messaging through Ramble. I thought it was strange that they would ask though. It was like this whole wap.cingular thing is some kind of secret club, and how did I know about it.

I was just persistent. If the CSR I got was clueless I just hung up and called back. I figured I would eventually find someone that bothered reading the training material.

Thanks - perfect solution to the ongoing CRS problems!
