I have a user with a 9800 and when you open his contacts it shows he has none. We are on a BES so these are his Outlook contacts.

There is the search box at the top.
There's "Add a new contact" and "Remote Lookup"
But no contacts.

If I go into Options, then highlight "Desktop", Wireless Sync is on and it shows him having 1256 contacts.

What's weird is we can search using the universal search and when we compose a new email they are all "findable".

We restarted his device but are experiencing the same problems.

Have you tried doing a RSET on the contact database on the Blackberry?

I don't know BES systems, but I've encountered this problem during total battery drains on two occasions - a friends 9700 lost 5000 contacts (running OS 5). And my 9700 lost about a thousand (running OS 6).

However, I never did think of trying to test for contacts in the email "TO" field .... My guess is they are probably gone (I think that the names that come up are likely just a separate database derived from just the Addr Book Names and Email Addr associated with them)

I ended up using Desktop manager for a selective data restore for the contacts. I lost 3 days worth of annotations and edits :(

First try to force a slow sync:

Go to your service books and highlight the DESKTOP[SYCN] service book. Press the menu key. Delete the DESKTOP[SYCN] service book and then press the menu key again and select undelete. This will initialize a slow sycn with outlook.

Assuming you're on BES, your best bet is to disable wireless redirection on the BB contacts, open advanced backup/restore, clear contacts database, do a one way sync from outlook to the BB overwriting anything on BB, disable that desktop manager sync, enable wireless sync again and problem solved.

(I'm going to hazard a guess and say the user installed a program like Liveprofile recently?)

Did you check to see if he has a filter turned on? Open address book - bring up the menu scroll to and select Filters and make sure none are checked...
