If you search for information on blackberries and GPS, you will find this to be a very common problem. It took me a lot of work (and two hours on the phone with BB tech support last weekend) to get mine up and running on an 8330. Initially, I had a software build on my BB that was not compatible with my carrier. (I didn't even know this was a possibility. I had downloaded all the latest builds, and OS 4.5.0.131 or something similar. The BB tech guy advised me that to start with, that build wouldn't work with my carrier's software, so I downgraded to 4.5.0.77). After that, took some more tweaking in the settings to get everything just right. And it is slow to find satellites, nothing like a car unit for example. Good luck.

I've noticed a common problem with many BB users is that they try to use the GPS indoors or while moving. The BB devices come with a GPS receiver that's very poor in quality (comapred your standard TomToms and Garmins of the world).

With all the Blackberries (Telus 8703e, Rogers 8800, Rogers 9000, Rogers 8310, Telus 8330) I've owned, it's been a pain to use.

When starting the GPS, I had to be outdoors and IDLE. If I'm in my car driving and try to search, it will not acquire a signal. If I'm sitting in a parking lot for abotu 30-60 seconds and search, then it picks up the signal. It's been the case with EVERY SINGLE Blackberry I've owned. None of them have worked indoors either.

Once the signal is acquired, then it works fine when driving.

You need to be outside with a clear view of the sky. Make sure location services is on.

Can take 15-20 minutes or longer to get at least 3 sats for a fix.

Wirelessly posted

And mine is still quirky. Usually have to turn location off and then back on in the advanced settings to jump start it. Even with a clear view of the sky it can take several minutes to get a lock. Not an impressive feature of the BB, IMHO.

Now a lot of things make sense. I have a colleague who could never get his $9.95/month Sprint GPS service to work. But he'd always try to start it when we were on the road. After about 10 mintues of holding it to the window and everything, I'd pull up Google maps and figure out where we were. He eventually just download Google maps.

Have to say I have one less excuse to buy an 8900 now. So I'll pretend I didn't read this.

Interesting -- I've never had problems using GPS on my BB's in my cars. Do you have metallic tint on your windows? That could be the problem.

Do you have GPS devices that work indoors? My BB's are fine near windows but that's about it.

Keep in mind that there are numerous rf ISSUES POSSIBLE.
Military Jamming is possible as well as interference from many different sources.
Personally once The GPS was enabled by Verizon it has worked quite well.
I do not believe that it is of LOW quality.
Also keep in mind that most GPS chipsets are inexpensive. and becoming less expensive all the time while becoming more sensitive at the same time.

ONE problem can be that while you make a receiver more sensitive it also can become more susceptible to interference.

Everytime I make the refresh, on GPS, I get the message : GPS location update failed.
I have the next options, marked as follows :
GPS Data source : Blackberry 8310
GPS Services : Location ON

The version software is : 4.5.0.55 ( platform 2.7.0.68 )
Carrier : Orange Romania

Did I miss something?
