Would anybody be willing to post the new and improved ringtones that they created to share with those of us that are not technically inclined? Thanks

Worked perfectly for me. I was able to amplify the ringtone almost to the point of distortion. Hope this helps!
I downloaded AUDACITY, but how do you actually use this program to CHANGE the mp3 ringer and change the volume to 150%? How is this done exactly? I am having difficulties doing it actually.

Sorry for being so lame with this program... please help!

I've had mines for exactly 14 days, and I SWEAR the volume has gotten worse for when it rings as does the vibrate, I could atleast feel the vibrate or even hear the vibrate when placed on a hard surface, but now I miss all sorta calls. I am very tempted to go back to the 8703e, but being the new gadget freak that I am, I will probably feel left out and get the 8830 again after a month or so...lol

I know the feeling. Some type of instructions would have been nice from the provider, but it was free .

Well, Wavepad wins over Audacity for being easier to understand. I had to read the help file on Audacity and then when it came to saving as a mp3 it said I had to download and insall a LAME encoder... too much for me!

Wavepad had an option that said "amplify sound?" Check! And I was done and it worked.

My question now is when I take the amplified file and copy it into Media Manager for transfer to the BB -- it asks which conversion type I want. "Optimal" sounds like a good choice, but I picked "no conversion" thinking I didn't want my newly amplified file to be toyed with. Is that the correct choice?

No conversion is the right choice.

Better instructions:
1. Get wavepad
2. Open wavepad, open your ringtone you want to amplify
3. Look for menu item on left that says "amplify sound?"
4. "100" is normal, you can amplify it up to 3x (300)
5. Save amplified file
6. Move to media manager to transfer to BB, select "no conversion tranfer method"

I notice the amplified versions of the ringtones showed they were fewer seconds than the originals, but when played it was the same 15sec clip.

I have vzw 8830. At home I miss them even if I am the only one there - but sometimes I get spotty service, so I can't quite tell if it's the ringtone level or that the call didn't make it through at all. At work, it is just ambient noise of a regular office -- you wouldn't think it would be a problem -- but in the car, forget it, I was missing every one!

Maybe it's a difference between Sprint and VZW?

I dont think this is a Verizon issue. I am with Telus and have the 8830. Same thing with the low volume.

On another forum people have said that WAV files naturally play louder than mp3 files. When you increase the volume of a WAV file it will sound a lot louder than the exact same amplified mp3 file.

So I decided to do a test. I got a ringer of a old fashioned bell ringer in a mp3 and a WAV format. I increased the volume of both of them to about 250%. The mp3 file is louder than the stock ringers on the 8830, but still low especially if you are out and about.

The WAV ringer file is so loud you can see heads turn even in a crowded subway or noisy street. The only problem with the WAV file its quite large, about 715kb. However you can put it in a memory card so it won't take up system memory. I don't have a card yet so I just put it in the phones main memory.

I have put the WAV ring file at the following location, so just cut and paste the below link to download it.

Bingo on the wav files. I just resaved my amplified mp3 ringtones as wav and there is a significant difference.

thanks!

I used Wavepad on an original CTU24 mp3 file, bumped the volume to 400% and saved as both an mp3 and wav. None are louder than the original. Hmmm....

I took one of the stock Verizon mp3 ringers and, using Audacity, bumped the volume and saved as a wav. I put it on my friends' media card, slipped it into his 8830 and, WOW, big difference.

nickp,

Did you copy the file to your BB using "no conversion" method?
I heard that amplifying sound did not work on the stock ringers, only ones you add -- however LarryH seems to have had success. Maybe Audacity works on stock ringers and Wavepad does not??

I saved the file that was created by someonexh and it works great.... Thanks

I notice talk about modifying the default ringtones put in you phone memory. How do you get to those files?

I have not figured out how to browse the system memory yet..

Dan

How about having a "sticky" for modified ringers for our 8830's?

GoBlue, would you write it up for us? I'll post it over on the FAQ for certain. I think it is more appropriate there.
