how to edit item from list?

hi all
i am developing a application. in which, i am adding itme in list.these item displaying as message on screen with sub and message body.. i added three custom menu of this screen i.e add,edit and delete.add and delete are working but i dont know how to edit after select specific message from screen..
can anyone guide me?
