For me the ability to use my phone as an occasional modem for my laptop and for traffic updates for my sat nav is essential - and something that I can do on my ancient K800i (but not the iPhone).

Deeply...just set my Storm up as a tethered modem. It was a very simple process. The speed at my location is 1.7meg down and .6 meg up. That's about 4 or 5 times faster than I was able to achieve with my Treo 600W as modem using pdanet at the same location.
I have an unlimited data plan so modem usage is part of the deal.

More Info Req. Same Topic
So... I have a Storm and I have a PC card which I'd like to eliminate.
My Question:
Pros/Cons/Software needed to tether the Storm?
Thanks in advance to a great bunch of 'users'!

Well, when you get a phone call, whatever you're doing on the internet freezes until the phone call is complete. This can be annoying at times if you're connected to, say, AIM or something - it'll kick out your connection if you're on the phone for even a minute or so and you'll have to log back in. Annoying sometimes but not a dealbreaker for me. I tether as my home internet connection.
On the plus side, it's cheaper and your phone stays charged all the time while tethering. I've never used my regular home charger.
The software used to connect is included with the storm (VZAccess Manager) and is identical to the software that your aircard uses (if you're using a Verizon aircard that is). You'll need to uninstall the VZAccess Manager for your aircard if you intend to install it for your berry.

Con You have to remember your Micro usb cable, Laptop needs 2 USB ports, if you're like me and have a wireless mouse. Data speed, probably a little slower than the card, but I need some geeks to step in and answer that for me. Disconnects internet when receiving a phone call
Pro Save $30-45/month cost, no more external card, with the phone and the laptop, you're pretty much connected wherever you have signal. In some places, thats a huge deal, in other words, IT IS their internet.

You do NOT have to install the VZAccess Manager to use your Storm (or a Pearl) as a tethered modem. You just need to install the Blackberry Desktop Manager so that the drivers for the Blackberry are on your computer. If the Blackberry Device (not Desktop) Manager is running, your BB will then show up as a modem and you can configure a Dial-Up Networking connection as normal. For details, search around on here. I have posted this info, with details, before.

Yep, true, but your browser will redirect to a verizon activation page, no way around it. it's still $15/month.

If you put your login info into the DUN does it still go to the login page?
Assuming, as you say, that one is paying for tethering.
I remember the Alltel Axcess software wouldn't run on my client's Vista laptop last year so I set up the DUN with the dial in codes for his pcmcia card and off it went without a login page.

I never said you don't need to pay for tethering. I just said you don't need to install their software.
I do pay for tethering, and my browser has never been redirected to an activation page.

You do NOT need to put in login info, and you do not get directed to any login page - as you say, assuming you are paying for tethering.

You can create a DUN connection using Bluetooth in a laptop/desktop and your Storm. You just won't be able to charge the Storm in a connection this way.

Sure you can. You just have to connect it to a wall charger.

Obviously... What I meant was that you wouldn't be to charge the phone through a Bluetooth connection.

Just to add my $0.02.... I have a $40 unlimited data plan with Telus and my tethering is free and I use it a lot. So much that when the accidently dropped my data off the phone, my next bill was $4000, I got a $5000 also before they got it fixed and credited the amount on my invoice.

Yes you can use your blackberry to tether. I am not sure what service provider you have but with verizon I had to install vz access to my computer. However they do charge you for it. It does work pretty fast. They have a limit on your data usage as well

Hey Joe - I am on Telus and they keep giving me the run around on tethering. What plan do you have?
Thanks

How's the battery life when you tether? I have it set up for both my Storm and Bold.......Just haven't used it yet because I also have VZW/ATT air cards.
