Default vz navigator upgrade doesn't enable GPS on google maps on 8830?

Please Login to Remove!

So of the many diatribes against verizon locking their GPS I wasn't expecting this: after "upgrading" my 8830 from an external gps puck to verizon's vz navigator I was horrified to find that (although vz navigator works fine) that google maps and blackberry maps can't access the internal gps. Looking under Options in blackberry maps where you select the GPS device only gives choices of none, or my bluetooth gps puck. A call to verizon verifies that only vz navigator has access to gps info. Damn. Can anyone confirm this?

Try this

1. Turn on the VZ Navigator program.
2. Click on 'maps', then click on 'follow me maps'.
(This activates the gps capability of the VZW Blackberry device)
3. Leaving VZ Navigator running, open the other application you want

A user of our product found this work-around and we are trying to verify that it works not only on just our app (GolfTraxx), but everything else that seems to be blocked.

I tried that but no joy.

I've also found that a nasty side effect of trying to invoke blackberry maps (where options are set to external puck gps because only other choice is none) is that it resets the system GPS default to external gps (so that then vz navigator won't work the next time unless either you fire up the puck or reset the system default back to internal).

It's always something.
