Default T-Mo curve + $9.99 UMA plan = free browsing with Hotspots?

Please Login to Remove!

Hey guys,

Just came back from Starbuck's with my new Curve. While I was there, the indicator showed UMA and I was able to browse the internet (pretty fast too). Does this mean that with 9.99 UMA plan you can also use Hotspots for browsing?

Is that just with the Curve or can you do that with a laptop too?

It would be nice if someone would write a matrix of available add on plans ($10 H@H or regular $20 Hotspot addon plans) and what access they provide you with either a phone or a laptop. Here is an attempt at one.

The first table is for what you can do at a general 3rd party or home WiFi site that you have access to (either it's an open WiFi site or you got access from the site's owner through other means). Pretty much the only thing that matters is whether or not you have H@H and that just affects whether the UMA feature is unlimited or costs minutes:
Code:
                             Open Wifi network
                     Neither H@H Hotspot Both
8320 data use unl unl unl unl
8320 UMA calls mins unl mins? unl
laptop data use unl unl unl unl
The next table is what you might be able to do at a T-Mobile branded Hotspot site, depending on which plans you may have signed up for. Since T-Mobile can set the access policies for these sites this table is a little more complicated than the first table that assumed you had WiFi access:
Code:
                              T-Mobile Hotspot
                     Neither H@H Hotspot Both
8320 data use No unl unl? unl
8320 UMA calls mins unl mins? unl
laptop data use No No unl unl
If anyone has any info to fill in the missing pieces of that table, let me know and I'll try to keep it updated. The only issue still unconfirmed/TBD is whether or not the Hotspot plan gives the 8320 any privileges over having no addon plan. I think the answer is that they allow UMA access and charge you minutes, but haven't confirmed the answer since I don't have the plan. I would also think that they would allow you data usage since there is no way to distinguish your phone from a regular laptop user.
(Edit 1: From T-Mobile's H@H FAQ - H@H does not let you use your laptop at T-Mobile Hotspots)
(Edit 2: Added lots of explanation text about the tables)
(Edit 3: Confirmed today that my 8320 with no H@H and no Hotspot plan connected to a Starbucks Hotspot site for "uma" (lowercase) - made 2 phone calls with GSM radio turned off - couldn't use data, but my connection was poor as I was outside the store)
(Edit 4: Sat in a Starbucks for 5 minutes today to confirm that you can only browse the T-Mobile "buy a Hotspot plan or cool WiFi device from us" web pages through their Hotspot if you don't have either access plan...)

Thanks for the information! I have been asking this all this time! I even made a post about it too!

It's right here...

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...-hotspots.html

Now it's been confirmed! Thanks!

I don't have to go to the dark side anymore and get a Windows phone! I wait until I get my next pay check and hello Blackberry 8300!

oh... wait...

After reading your post again...

You are talking about the 9.99 e-mail add on right?

Not the 9.99 HotSpots @ Home plan right?

oh... that's almost a stupid question...

Of course if you pay for HotSpots @ Home, you will be able to use HotSpots at Starbucks.

It will not make sense if you can not do so.

Actually, I already had the T-Mobile unlimited Hotspot account (which costs $19.99) and it worked, but tomorrow I am going to swap that over to H@H. As long as I have my BB, I can live without the Hotspot for WiFi on my PC.

So can you tether your BlackBerry connected to a T-Mobile Hotspot (i.e. Starbucks) to your laptop, basically giving you T-Mobile Hotspot service for free?

It's not really free because you paying for HotSpots @ Home.

$19.99 Blackberry plan + $9.99 HotSpots @ Home = $29.98 Total.

That's why I am thinking of leaving Blackberry world and go to the Windows world if I can not use the Blackberry 8320 Curve at Starbucks using HotSpots without paying extra for it.

I might as well get a Windows phone like the Kaiser that is coming out at the end of October. Than I only have to pay $19.99 and it already comes with HotSpots.

With the H@H plan, are calls made under any WiFi connection free/unlimited minute usage, or is it only calls made under the WiFi of your @H router, and T-Mobile HotSpots?

For example, if I subscribe to H@H and go to my friends house and pick up his WiFi, and decide to make a call while connected to it, do I use my minutes?

If this has already been asked and answered, please direct me to the post. Thanks

You can use it, if it is free. Hotspots is not free Wireless Internet Access - T-Mobile HotSpots ...... The 9.99 for uma is a darn good deal, unlimited mins on any wifi connection....Plus unlimited data over wifi.

H@H and Hotspot are two different services!!!

Summary:

If you have H@H, all domestic calls over UMA are not charged against minutes.

International calls over H@H are different.

I see what you are talking NJ blackberry. I think a sticky needs to be made so people can get info on just UMA.

UMA is unlimited no matter what open wifi connection is used. If it can connect you can use wifi, That is if you have the unlimited plan
