Just how much do I need for my 8310 to work properly? I have 7815754bytes now. How much improvement will I get if I double it?

At least 12MB???

When I first powered up mine, I had 10MB free.
Since then it's been between 10 and >1MB, but mostly hovering around the lower end.

I've decided to wait till I get a media card before loading anything other than a few more apps and ring tones.

I've run fine for quite some time with 8MB but you do need to really pay attention as your device memory runs low. The BB will start deleting your data to free up space if it runs out.

No, just your onboard memory. Menu>Options>Status your file free should be at least 12,000,000 to be sure that you have good performance and don't lose anything.

You won't get any more improvement, and this whole 12MB thing is a complete undocumented myth.
Your device will start to really suffer and erase old data if your device memory (File Free) runs to Zero.

I compare the 12,000,000 file free myth to the early days of windows where everyone thought that defragmenting your hard drive was the cure all for every system problem.

Your safest course of action is to keep as much free memory as you possibly can, simply to avoid the scenario where you device runs to zero due to application memory leak or some other random factor.

I disagree with you Soup. As far as I know there is NO documentation from RIM on a limit other than the built in feature to preserve device functionality. The device can have wild swings in the amount of Memory used at any given time (we have all seen it). When the application switcher hit's it's limit and the memory starts leaking it can go rapidly and you want a buffer. It can chew through 7mb in no time. Depending on your reserves for Pics/Etc. messages can get hammered without warning. My messages are critical to me so I chose to keep it above 12mb.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion I suppose. And as you stated the "safest course of action is to keep as much free memory as you possibly can" I choose to pick 12mb as the limit I feel safest.

I have
33 033 969 Bytes = 31.5036478 megabytes FREE at the moment.

Memory Cleaner may help users in gaining back some bytes.

Hmm.. may be "zerog46" and "jsconyers" are right. I think RIM has wrong specs on their website.

Look at these links

8320: BlackBerry - BlackBerry Curve 8320 smartphone .. Search for the word "Maximize Convenience". It says 64MB of built-in memory.

8330: BlackBerry - BlackBerry Curve 8330 smartphone .. Search for the word "Maximize Convenience". It also says 64MB of built-in memory.

is there a difference between built in memory and flash memory because on the 8330 website it has 64mb of built on memory on the features tab and 96 mb of flash memory under the specs tab. Just wondering

i usually have a file total of 83.6 mb and usually sit around 45mb
