What do you mean by "i barely ever connect"?
Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan?

You need a BB Data Plan for GPS applications to function properly.

And Google Maps is free. You lose nothing by trying it out.

First of all, as soupandsandwich said, you need a BB dataplan for the map applications to work. For the most part, maps are downloaded as they are needed and cannot be stored ont he device or the SD card. There are a couple that can be however. Look in the GPS section for a review of many of the apps out there.

Second, in order for your position to display properly, you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky to lock onto the GPS satellites. This can between 5 and 20 minutes. GoogleMaps will give you an initial position using cell tower triangulation, not GPS and is accurate to about 2000 meters or so.

Do you have blackberry data plan or blackberry email only plan?

Blackberry email only plan will not let you download stuff from the Internet, including maps for BB Maps.

If you can browse the internet using blackberry internet browser, Maps should work.

There are quite a few options you can check out in the GPS forum. There's a thread with a pretty thorough list of GPS apps. Some are free. Many have free trials. Nothing beats first hand experience. Give some of them a shot.

In addition, which provider are you with? It will depend on what you need the map for, but for directions I have found that VZ Navigator works very well.
