These legacy devices were designed to be used pretty much as they came. Adding programs, ringtones, pictures, etc., was never part of the plan. It wasn't until RIM came out with the 8300 Curve that they added media card support for storing pictures and ringtones, etc. This allowed more of the 64 MB of internal memory to run the OS, making a smoother user experience and allowing more aftermarket programs to be used.
