I had success on Cingular. The settings I used were the AT&T setting for the additional control string and the rest were all of the Cingular settings. Speeds I am getting on CNET's bandwidth meter are as follows from 3 tests:
97.9kbps
148.1kbps
117.4kbps

Not bad and it works nicely.
In speaking to a RIM technical support person, he indicated that the issue lies with Cingular in that they require an additional data setting (and charge) for tehering. I think my account has that.

I did an uninstall of the Desktop software and started fresh.

YUP, it worked! I can now connect my 8700c to the Cingular network and use it as a laptop modem. The trick was in fact to uninstall the existing BB Desktop Manager software and perform a new install. Thanks guys!

Hey all.. I deleted my old modem driver for my 7290 and my old Blackberry Desktop installs before I loaded the one that came with my 8700.. now I have no c:\program files\research in motion\modem drivers folder! :( I don't see any drivers on the CD either.. are you guys using the old drivers to get this to work? Or did you get the new drivers from somewhere else.. if so, hook me up @ romerom at gmail.com

got it.. uninstalled old desktop software, reinstalled software off of CD.. originally expected modem files to go in \program files\research in motion\*modem* it ended up just showing up in my modem list as "Standard Modem"

init string = +cgdcont=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR"
username = [email address]
password = CINGULAR1
flow control unchecked
modem error control unchecked
modem compression unchecked

Has anyone had luck in getting Cingular to add the WIX items to their account? Today was the first time I've tried and I don't know if I just need to keep calling until I get to someone that knows something...

Be careful about using the BlackBerry as a modem on Rogers. Rogers charges $7 per megabyte above the 25 megabyte cap of your Unlimited plan. I know, it's nuts.

I tried the modem bit on my Cingualr 7290 and quickly ran up a big data bill beyond my Blackberry plan. All, use caution and check your credit references before using it as a modem (or is this somehow different on the new system/device?).

From my understanding you CAN use EDVO on the 7100's, but NOT on the Cingular 8700- that is still correct right? If so, was it true from the earlier post that Cingular maybe enable it?

Also, does anyone have information regarding cost associated with running it on the 7100 w/Cingular?

Sorry, for the cross post, but this seems appropriate here:

On a BlackBerry 8700c with no additional account setup (just BB Unlimited and Voice)

APN: wap.cingular
Username for APN: [email address]
Password for APN: CINGULAR1

For Modem Use (Yes this works too )

Modem Properties:
Initialization String: +cgdcont=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR"

Dial-up Properties:
USERNAME: [email address]
PASSWORD: CINGULAR1

On an side note I did this during my last billing period and It showed up on my bill as used data, however, there was no charge for it.

Hope this helps !

I am also not new to Blackberry but just got my 8700c yesterday and would like specific instructions on how to use as a modem. Is a dial-up ISP required? I have made my settings match those in the posts above but do not know how to actually make the connection.

Thanks

The current settings on my 8700c are as follows:

APN: wap.cingular
Username for APN: [email address]
Password for APN: CINGUALR1

On my laptop the settings are:

Modem Properties:
Initialization String: +cgdcont=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR"

Dial-up Properties:
USERNAME: [email address]
PASSWORD: CINGULAR1

Stinsonddog,

I downloaded your Tips document and found it very helpful. I have printed all 17 pages and plan on keeping it in my briefcase. Great Stuff! Unfortunately, I am still unable to connect. I keep getting error 736. I posted this above. I made my settings like darkhorse did above but no luck. I will keep trying.

Again, thanks for the tips.
