Recently got a 9700, my third Blackberry but first of this model. The first week I had it I flew six times and on at least three or four of the flights, it turned itself on, usually shortly before landing. It was as if the mere proximity of a strong signal somehow convinced the device to turn itself on.

It was properly turned off and holstered before takeoff and there was nothing scheduled that would trigger the auto-on function - in fact, when I turned it off I got the message that it would turn itself back on as scheduled the following morning.

I saw one other guy on the Crackberry forums who reported the same phenomenon - anyone here seen this?

This seems very unlikely, although very odd.

To my knowlegde, a wireless network could not send a "turn on" signal to a blackberry when it's off because the Blackberry isn't on the network.

Not too sure of the answer for it, but that's quite a strange phenomenom

When you turned it off, did you check the time it said that it would turn back on?

I've had a similar experience. My guess is that this is triggered by removing it from a case that includes BB's magnetic switch.

or...it was scheduled by the "auto on/off". Removing it from a magnetic case in itself will not turn it on, unless you hit the "on/off" button.

OK - I've managed to figure out the cause, and it's not airplane related at all. It's the fact that this particular model, when turned off and stored in the holster, can be turned on by even a slight momentary pressure on the holster case. It happened to me again last night at the theater. I've never had this happen with any other Blackberry.

I don't know what the solution is other than making sure I have it set to silent mode for theaters, and silent plus airplane mode (comms off) on planes. That or pulling the battery out whenever I want it to stay off.

VERY inconvenient!
