Default Must disable password to use Bridge

Please Login to Remove!

If I attempt to use Bridge with my 9780, I am asked for my device password. That is, the PB prompts me for it, after the connection is made but before I can actually access any Bridge files. The problem is that the PB won't accept the password when I enter it. I click the "OK" button and nothing happens. I can't get rid of the prompt or turn Bridge off so I have to reset the PB. If I disable the password on the 9780 first, it works fine. I had to return my first PB due to sound problems, and I've had the same issue on both devices. Is this a known bug?

My BB is password protected and the Bridge unlocks without any issue. Due you have the latest Bridge software on your device? Delete the pairing and set it up again.

The version of Bridge is 1.0.0.93. I don't know if that's the latest, but the "check for updates" option doesn't tell me otherwise. Deleting and resetting the pairing doesn't fix it. I wonder if there's some obscure setting on the BB getting in the way.

There is no setting that I am aware of. As far as the bridge, I am pretty sure my settings are default, if there are indeed any settings on setup. I just looked and I did not see an edit button.

I hate to say it, but I would try forcing an OS reinstall.

What is that? A security wipe on the PB?

Do a search on forced upgrade, or debrick. The basics of the procedure is to connect the PlayBook to Desktop Manager, restart the PlayBook, and tell Desktop Manager to check for update. Desktop Manager will not be able to communicate with the PlayBook and will prompt to reinstall the OS, or some similar prompt. Selecting the option to reinstall the OS will cause Desktop Manager to "debrick" the PlayBook, which results in the PlayBook being wiped and the OS installed.

You could try a simple security wipe from PlayBook options first. That will simply delete all user data and settings. Maybe that will solve your problem. I don't really know. My gut, if it were me, would be to force an OS reinstall.

Update: Reinstalling the OS didn't fix it. Hard to believe it's a hardware issue on two PBs in a row.

I just downloaded the new version of Bridge, but that didn't fix it either.

I don't see how it could be hardware...The only difference is whether password is set?...That looks like software, walks like software, and quacks like software.

But it is strange.

That's right. If the password on my 9780 is set, my PB gets stuck at the password entry dialog, with no way to back out of it or do anything. It doesn't happen when the Bridge connection is made, but only when I try to do anything with it.

Trouble is, I tend to forget this, so I get a lot of practice resetting the PB. I use a golf tee to press the little button.

Maybe when the OS upgrade is re-released, it'll work properly...

Probably you've already tried: but how about setting a really simple password like one character, lower case? If that works it may be some obscure issue with your current password.

Are you running the stock Tmo OS on your BB?

Update: I've installed the new OS update and the problem persists.

@ErnieH -- No, that's one thing I haven't tried (changing the password). I'll do so and report back.

@southwestcomm -- No, I'm running 6.0.0.600, which is official on some carriers now, but not T-mo.

Edit: Could someone describe for me how it's supposed to work? That is, I set up the Bridge Connection between the two devices, and click, say, the Calendar icon. I should be prompted for a password? As it stands, I get "password incorrect. Please enter correct password". There is no actual entry field for the password, and the keyboard doesn't appear. When I manually bring up the keyboard and type the password, nothing happens on screen. No **** or anything at all. Then I click OK and nothing happens.

If I pick up the BB and then enter the password, it shows it as the second try. It's as if the PB is somehow trying to send the BB a password on its own, before I'm even prompted.

For the record, changing the password didn't help. I'll just have to be better at remembering to disable my device password. I've googled and found that others have this problem, but I haven't found a solution yet.

I have just discovered "Secure GC enabled" set on my 9780. I think this is a BES thing. I have never been on BES, but this was a replacement handheld sent out by T-Mobile. I wonder if this could be the cause of the problem and, if so, how to get rid of it.

You can try wiping your phone.

Secure GC is IT policy related and really has nothing to do with your carrier, other than the fact they sent you a refurbed unit.

If wiping the unit doesn't solve the problem, you may have to bite the bullet and send it back.

The "Secure GC enabled" is not related to BES.

In many cases, the user has WorldMate Live installed on their device, and if WorldMate Live is deleted, the Secure GC is remove.

Also, you might check your Content Protection and make sure it is disabled as well. Sometimes, disabling content protection will allow the Secure GC to go away.

Re whether secure GC enabled is related to the problem or not, my BlackBerry shows it and I don't have any trouble.

I don't have WorldMate Live. And if Content Protection is the same as Encryption, I don't have that turned on either.

I noticed for the first time that when I have a Bridge connection established, when I first attempt to open a Bridge file or service, a dialog box flashes onto the PB screen for an instant, and is then gone, too fast for me to see what it is, but I'm sure it has something to do with this password problem. It's as if for some reason the PB is attempting to send a password to the BB on its own, and that's why I get the "Password incorrect message"....but why is it doing that?

I guess there's no point reinstalling the updated OS.

i'm using the bridge now and noticed something strange...not sure if it's related to the new PB OS or not, but i had to unlock the BB and then bridge by entering the BB password again on the PB. The bridge would not connect with the BB locked. May be a "feature" just hadn't noticed it before. Not sure if this may be related to your issue or not.
