That was the issue I had.

Apparantly if the manufacturer, in this case RIM, doesn't declare to them that a defect exists, in this case dust, they aren't bound to replace it. When I called they had zero documentation stating that a problem with dust existed with the 8700.

According to the post 2 above me, they will, but can I get some further confirmation? Any experience with dust replacements through Cingular would be helpful.

Thanks!
Call Cingular Blackberry Support. I had mine replaced a few weeks ago. They'll ask you if there's anything else wrong that makes you appear to be abusing their policy, such as cracked screens, etc. that are not covered by warranty.

Assuming the unit is in good shape besides the dust problem, they'll replace it without any fuss...

the silver casing has a scratch or 2 on it from when I scraped up against the corner of a wall once and a drop mark or two...the dust problem has been present since I got it though.

I had some blemishes from dropping the unit a few times. They were explicitly concerned with whether or not my screen was cracked. As long as the screen was intact, they didn't care about blemishes on the case...

Sweet. It's a slippery little thing isn't it? My screen is fine, so it should be ok. I think I may invest in some screen protectors and/or a better holster for a new device. Any advice on that matter?

I'd go with Seidio for the holster and Screen Patronus for the screen protectors.

Links to reviews of both can be found on my web site.

I haven't been able to get a hold of them to get this replaced yet, and yesterday my unit took a nasty spill. The screen is still fine, but it has a NASTY scratch on the bottom of the unit where it hit the pavement...you still think they will replace it?

Ok, so I finally called it in, and they are going to replace it under warranty. I told them about some case blemishes from rubbing up against a wall, so hopefully they don't give me a hard time about some of the scrapes and scratches. Screen is fine, so all should be well. We'll see.

Nah, anything normal wear and tear is fine. They told me that you could try and drive a DRY ice-pick through the device and they would still replace it. They're not concerned about small belmises and stuff. As long as chunks aren't missing and there isnt liquid damage, they will likely replace it.

I think I'll pick them up.

Also, for your wallpaper section on your site, you need some Penn state nittany lions wallpaper, as well as some Baltimore ravens. Just a thought.

Cingular replaced mine due to dust under the screen. Will prob get a refurb, but they said that the dust was an issue and it has been resolved. I highly doubt it, but will see how the replacement holds up.

got my refurb as well. I ordered the Seido clip/holster, so hopefully that will help me avoid drops. My OEM holster broke so my device would fall out if jarred enough.

Does anyone have the exact number for the Cingular line that is replacing the Blackberries? I called Cingular and RIM multiple times and no one has any idea of what I'm talking about and they're all unable to help and just send me over to someone else. Any help would be much appreciated.

You should be able to simply call Cingular customer care and ask to be transfered to the warranty exchange department.

Is this still going on or has everything been resolved?
