Default Pearl or new BB with full Qwerty???

Please Login to Remove!

I've been reading about the new BB Pearl. I am trying to decide between purchasing it or waiting for a new BB with the full Qwerty keypad. Any thoughts pro/con on this? I have never tried a smaller format BB, but it seems like it would be frustrating to type using a non-full qwerty keypad. Is it?

Has RIM announced a new BB with full Qwerty keypad that also has the camera, video, etc?

Would I be better off going with an 8700g?

I have T-Mobile as my service provider...

Thanks,

footballcoach

I would have to say wait for the 8800 (qwerty version).. for me, personally i love using qwerty. Right now I have a 8700g and I will be waiting for the qwerty version one. Rumor has it that the 8800 will have a wi-fi.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7130/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

The only advice I could give you is wait till they are both available then go to the store and try them both out. As for the suretype after a few days the blackberry learns how you type, the errors will be less and less frequent. It doesn't hurt to give it a shot

"she" "age" and "hey" "get" use the same keys for example. way too annoying. If you need one now, I'd get the 8700. There's not even a date or anything for the next qwerty phone, so I wouldn't wait
The 7130's from Cingular and Rogers do a much better job with the suretype. I used one for a couple months and initially thought it would be like the 7100 surtype but it was not...I was impressed.

The problem is not errors per se, it's the simple fact that, as posted earlier in the thread, there are SEVERAL 2 and 3 letter words which share the exact same keystrokes (e.g. GET and HEY). When you type one of these words, suretype literally has to guess which one you want. And near as I can tell there's no real AI to it (i.e. no grammar or context awareness) - it just picks one. And somehow, it gets it wrong a LOT of the time - more than the 50% it should get it wrong. That means you have to manually go back in and change it. This REALLY slows down suretype productivity.

It does learn the words you use most often after a while. But, yes, there are and always will be a those three letter words that SureType will just select at random and force you to edit it.

The only thing is, I hope the QWERTY one supports UMTS, HSDPA... I still cant believe they made this bad ass new device with a standard EDGE class radio.... they really should be building for the future, not whats getting overhauled....

FYI, the predicted 8800 isn't supposed to have a camera, and won't be available until late Q1 '07 or early Q2. So it's a ways off...that will probably factor into your decision...

Being a new member who's in the same dilemma, I'm inclined to just wait. I believe that the new QWERTY will be here by the end of the year and I'm having a tough time dropping 400-bucks on the soon to be "older" model. Conversely, if were in the xxx8220;I need itxxx8221; category, I would clearly opt for the 8700 series.

Looks like I spoke too soon. Well, scratch that - I may end up in the "I need it" camp sooner that I thought.

I totally agree...
Suretype is great, but you are constantly going back to correct the same words over and over.
It seems to me that the 7130 kind of learns which one you type more (like: hey or get) and that is what it goes with most of the time.
It can get frustrating, especially if you are typing a longer email.

Full qwerty in 7130 size would be great in my opinion!

Default 8100 SureType

Hi,

I just read that the 8100 Pearl is supposed to have "enhanced" SureType that will guess the word you typed by looking at context, e.g. words previously typed in the sentence.

This sounds like it would "fix" some of the issues described above.

All that said, I'm sticking to my 8700g - I find the one letter per key is easiest, especially when typing new names & addresses!

Now I have to make an entire set of new videos for the Pearl, but the 8100 Pearl Simulator is not yet available from RIM... oh well, such is the life of a video tutorial producer...

All I can say is that when Cingular gets the full Qwerty model, I hope it's BLACK! The silver color of the 8700c BLOWS!

Default Want the phone Don't want t moble

I have been very loyal to Verizon (going on 12 years) and still have my original number.

Any chance this beauty comes out CDMA anytime in the near future?

It pains me to see everyone always enjoy the latest toys and be the last to the party when Verizon finally catches on...

That enhanced feature you are talking about, sounds like the feature I have in my Motorola SLVR. I thought it was pretty awesome feature, more advance that those "conventional" predictive feature. It actually made it much easier to use because it remembers the words you have typed previously in silhouette -- giving you a preview of that word. Not actually type it for you only for you to click the delete button to edit it.

Been with so many suretype BBs and I know I would hate it the moment I test it (owned a 7100t and a 7100i which lasted only minutes before selling it on ebay), I still would want to get this 8100. I think I like the size of this BB and most of all the finish of the product. Black is always good for a phone or at least a dark colored one.

Any rumors on what this 8800 might be bringing to the table? I would love to see all of the features that are in the 8100 but not so sure about size. Are they planning on razr-izing the 8800 the same way they did the 81? One reason I have stayed with the 7200 and now the 8700 series is screen size. I love the extra real estate and if the 8800 is going to be capable of playing video's I would really love it.

I am still holding on to my 8100, have till Tuesday to make a decision. I just joined TMobile so I have to decide to go with the larger format, more comfortable 8700 or stick with the richly featured, painful to use(my thumbs for dialing and typing and wrist when holding the phone) 8100. I feel if I get the 8700 I sacrifice alot in features.

Please help!

My first BB was a 7290, then I got the 8700c. Just for fun I picked up a used 7100 for Cingular that I use as a back up to my 8700. I do switch off everyonce in awhile, and have to say once you go qwerty you don't go back. While I do like the 7100 form factor, and yes I realize it has no EDGE, slower processer and less memory, I do like it. But like other people have posted I get very tired of the sure type and usually in a day or less cannot wait to switch back to my 8700. Takes me to long to hunt, peck, re-peck, back up, geez. In fact if I am using the 7100 people I text or e-mail with can tell, my messages are short and very abbreviated by comparison, as I just cannot imagine doing a long message or e-mail on sure type. Or thier message goes unanswered till I get back on the 8700 or to a keyboard. So give me the glam of the 8100 with full qwerty, and I will wait for that.

Here's the way my BB progression has gone:
Started with the Nextel 7520 for nine months, then switched to the 7100i because I wanted more of the 'phone' form from my BB. After eight months of that, I switched to the 7130 on the Sprint side (mostly because I never really used the DC and wanted to be able to test message...and EVDO doesn't hurt either). As much as I love the 'phone' form factor of the 7130, I started taking more into consideration the way(s) I use my device. The three things I use it most for are email, IM and text messaging...the phone part comes fourth, followed by the web browser. I'm good and proficient with the SureType. but with that being said...

...I'll be getting the 8707 from Sprint in a couple weeks for sure. I'm jsut ready to go back to the QWERTY keyboard. I know people got all hot and bothered when the Pearl came out, but, as cool of a phone as it is, it's not what I want. For me, it's TOO thin and I don't want to continue to use SureType (although I don't think SureType is evil by any means)...plus I could care less if my phone takes pictures or plays music...that's not why I have the phone. I've had a camera phone before...never used the camera more then five times maybe and I have other devices for music and what not.

This is all my personal opinion...obviously, I know what I want and that drives me to what device I want to use. On any given weekday, I have probably 100-150 sent and received emails, probably 20-40 text messages and countless IM messages...and maybe five phone calls. That's me, thats my usage.

So bring it on Sprint, let me see that 8707!
