I wonder if there is a software or one bigger icon for the Bold esktop which confirms that wi-fi is connected.
Infact when using internet I am never sure to be using a free wi-fi connection, or a connection under payment terms.

The wi-fi small icon in the desktop of the Bold is not clear at all !

There are two ways to indicate that the Bold is connected to WiFi:

1. The carrier name on the home screen will be ammended to include the WiFi network name you are connected to (i.e. AT&T - Home WiFi). You set this name in WiFi preferences when setting up the WiFi connection in the first place.
2. The small WiFi icon will be visible.

With regards to the WiFi icon, don't confuse "visible" with "white." If WiFi is connected, the icon will be gray. If WiFi is connected and the Bold is connected through WiFi to the BlackBerry data services, the icon will be white.

Ian, it seems you are very well prepared on BBerry matters. I want to ask you a question. I have a monthly plan with my provider ( TIM ITALY ) which includes bberry service and internet free locally and worldwide ( 45 euro per month all included ). Internet must use APN = blackBerry .net.
In this case what is the benefit of using wi-fi ? I cannot find any positive benefit in my case.
Any comment ?

It's what I own now. Prior, I had a 2003 SV1000S (Cursed Copper). Loved it too, but the GSX-R is in a whole different league.

The benefit of WiFi is speed and connectivity, but the degree of benefit depends on what cellular service is currently active on your phone. My provider is AT&T here in Georgia. If I am at home or at work, I only have EDGE coverage which is terribly slow, and EDGE doesn't allow for simultaneous voice and data usage. So, at home and at work, I have WiFi coverage as well. I can have voice over EDGE and data over WiFi at the same time, and the speed of WiFi is much faster than EDGE.

If I am on the road and hit a 3G (high-speed) area, I don't need/miss WiFi as I find 3G speeds fast enough. Plus, 3G service allows for simultaneous voice and data.

Another benefit of WiFi is that when you are out of your home area, and would otherwise be roaming and racking up big bills, a WiFi connection does not use your normal phone data plans (data and/or Internet, depending on your provider). I'm local in Australia, but visiting the US right now and getting "free" Internet access from various hotspots in the area.

Another word on the WiFi indicator, and indicator signals in general. On any BB device, if the connection name is in lower case, then the BB is getting data, but is not recognized by your service provider. That means internet browsing is available, but push data will not happen. The equivalent scenario using WiFi occurs when the local network name is added to the service provider area in the top-middle, but at the same time the WiFi indicator is grey.

When the service name is in upper case (EDGE, or 3G with the BB icon) that means the device was recognized/registered and push data is available. A white WiFi indicator with the network name added means that the device can get push services through the WiFi connection.

Then there's the whole issue about setting the preference of Mobile Network preferences...

Another reason to use wifi can be cellular coverage inside some office buildings. I just came from a meeting today where I had no 3G and EDGE was up and down all day. THe WiFi connected and I had access to the net for any application on the Bold that has been written to take advantage of WiFi. Not all older applications will take advantage of WiFi. Even some new ones. I'll be deleting a number of apps today because they don't support WiFi. Bye Bye Boopsie. :(
