Default Where are we at now with Google apps? Can Google apps bring BES functionality to BIS?

Please Login to Remove!

People all over the place are making use of Google aps..

Even if they don't ever LOOK at Google itself

People are using it to re direct mail... and as a stepping stone link to sync calendars...

And now Google just added a Task element (beta via Google Labs, adds onto Gmail) check it out.

So personally, I find all this trickery of linking one app to another, then to another.. Facebook, twitter, tweet, jot, whatever.. All rather hard to follow.

So I am apealing to Google fans to spell it out for me..

Can I bring some sort of BES style sync to my Calendar, Mail, address book, tasks etc - by making clever use of google?

Or is it all still 'semi working'?

Could I operate several business emails on my BB via Google? Any one doing it? How is it working out?

You might say why not just go for BES?

I would say I am a Mac user and not keen to abandon all my Mac apps - to use an outdated Entourage which is the 'poor cousin' of Outlook.

I have hopes the new mac Snow Leopard might bring some sync joy..

That's my mac-centric story anyway..

But in the meantime..

What are you getting done with Google?

And how are you doing it?

Many thanks in advance..

I do this and it works quite well. I have my gmail pull 4 of my mail accounts. I have also created identities that correspond to these mail accounts. I click the option to reply with the identity to which the messag was sent to, and have set my regular gmail account to default for new messages. It works like a breeze

I dont to task and message sync cause i do desktop sync ever day before and after work.

Hope this helps

P.S I've heard a lot of people say that it is easier to navigate in the gmail mobile app than in the regular BIS mail ;)

You can't sync tasks from Gmail (yet) but you can do contact and calendar sync to your BlackBerry. Mail is a given. In terms of syncing with your Mac, there is no Google Sync for Mac. CalDav will get your calendar across but not contacts.

Wondering what is better about it? Instead of moving your company mail over, sign up for a free Gmail account and try it out.

Default Google Sync

Download Google sync or read up on that. I have been a BIS user yearning for BES service until I got this. Now I have my email, contacts and calendar updated to my phone. Email is instant others I do daily but that is good enough for me.

OK great that's just the sort of real user experience I was looking for..

In case you think I might be being lazy...I am totally dog tired from looking into the ins and out of a zillion BB / Mac tasks programs over the last year or so.. (and to pass on the fruits of my exhaustive research, I have decided to go with the BB app Next Action! - as it has "GTD" contexts and doesn't have a zillion (or any) due date / alarm add-on's that clutter the screen. It doesn't rely on a web interface that lags and annoyingly, cant import any text whatsoever from the computer its running on, it updates fine via Pocket Mac and the BB Tasks app, but you can just hide Tasks away in the background and just use Next Action! Mac created ToDo's (grabbed from Mail text or your iCal - a wonderful thing about the Leopard OS) can be edited and sorted into basic contexts & projects on your BB and the next time you do a 'task' sync - the sorting work you did - is applied to your computers ToDos - so its perfect for me apart from the sync having to be manual via USB cable - lets see how the Google task app develops over time..)

So if I may, a few more really basic questions please...

Is there some sort of IMAP element to Gmail and BB emails being synced?

If I read an email on my BB - will it show up as read on my Gmail?

IF I send an email from either BB or home computer - will it show up in the others 'sent' folder - and be linked to the email it was responding to?

Will a 'draft' email created on one - show up on the other?

Is the BB / Google functionality that slick?

If not, what BES style function doesn't it do?

Can you export contacts and addresses so you aren't 100% reliant on Google. (That Google desktop thingy?)

Yes I want it all - who doesn't

I really appreciate the help here

Just to clarify -- email doesn't sync on any BB (regardless of whether you're on BIS/BES/whatever). It is pushed and reconciled. What you're looking for is full reconciliation.

Quite a lot. OTA sync is only one feature of BES. However, in the context of this thread, I'm assuming that OTA sync is all you're interested in.

Yes v helpful thanks..

Yes you are right, I don't need all the full range of BES style control over my own phone, like to disable it after 6pm, restrict web access etc.. its my own phone after all and not a big business infrastructure..

Great! I can see my next project for 2009 will be to try out Gmail OTA push and reconciliation!

All the advice and correction on the terminology is very appreciated..

Pile on more advice if you have it - many thanks..

I use google apps and have everything that I need wirelessly synced.

I use the Google Sync app on my BB for the Calender and the Contacts. I have IMAP enabled which reconciles my email with no issues.

I saw that google has a task list available now. But, it does not do me a lot of good until google comes out with a sync for it so that my tasks in google mail and my BB stay in-line. However, I am sure that google will come out with a sync app for the tasks soon or simply update the existing google sync to incorporate the tasks along with the calender and contacts.

Until that sync is available, I am going to keep using Remember the Milk (RTM) for my tasks. I have RTM embedded in my google mail screen just to the left of my inbox. RTM also has a nice little app which I have on my BB. It keeps my RTM tasks synced with my BB tasks and works very well.

No, I don't work for RTM. I just really like their solution since it was the final thing that I needed to use with my google apps for the full functionality that I need.
