I intermittently get failed backups using BackupExec 10d that appear to be caused by files in use under a couple Blackberry users' email boxes. I am running Exchange 2k3 and BES 4.1
A snapshot of the log is below. I read about a dbclean utility that purges these files. Is this what I need to run? If this is the case, can you give me an understanding of what these "hidden" bberry files are used for under the users' mailboxes on an Exchange server? Are they ok to purge at anytime?

honestly, i ignore them. I check to make sure nothing volitile is missing, but this seems to just be noise on the line.

I wouldn't suggest doing a brick-level backup of Exchange - it cumbersome and slow. Besides, E2K3 has the capability of restoring individual elements through recovery storage group - or, if this is still to much of a burden you could upgrade BE to 11d. Then every changed element get's backuped instantelly.

Open file backup Method? What style you using and what version of BE?

I would agree with Adramalech. We have multiple BES and Exchange servers. Exchange we just backup the mailbox stores and don't bother with individual users. This method works fine and we can still restore with the recovery groups - ok it takes a bit longer, but we have our stores split into managable sizes, so a full restore of a single store only takes about an hour to come off tape.

Off topic, but have you tried to restore a mailbox when you use the brick level method? We could never get it to work thats why we changed to the recovery group method.

What exactly doesn't work? I've seen it working a long time ago with BE 8.6 and Exchange 5.5. Usually, even with more recent versions a restore should work but it's also well known that backing up exchange on a brick-level will severely slow down backup performance - besides the more irrelevant problems like locked elements.
