I used to have a Bold 9000 that whenever I tethered over bluetooth, and I did a speed test, I would get 112ms in the latency test, 1.7mb/s down, and .7mb/s up. I have followed many ways to connect my 9700 to my MacBook Pro, bluetooth, wifi, and usb. In each and every connection, I receive 450ms in the latency test, .5mb/s down, and .08mb/s up. I am receiving horrible speeds. I am wondering why I could be getting these, when I used to get such high numbers before.

I am using 10.6.2 Snow Leopard.
I am using os 5.0.0.351.

Troubleshooting
I have tried different modem packages.
I have tried different connection types.
I have tried previous blackberry OS's.
I have tried even using it on my MacMini using 10.5.

I cannot seem to find a connection. The only thing I can think of is if they some how capped my speed on AT&T whenever my blackberry is set to Modem Mode. I see that people using an AT&T 9700 have significantly slower speeds than 9700 users on Rogers and T-Mobile.

Please help me, I don't want to go back to a 9000 with its terrible battery life and bulky phone.

Your speed depends on many factors outside of your control. Some of these are: the device itself, processor, memory, the connection, your distance to the tower, and tower congestion. So it could be any number of things affecting your results.

Using GSM 3G, you should see an average speed of 400 to 900 kbps (down), which it appears you have.

To have a fair test, you need to compare apples to apples by having both devices connect the same way at the same time to the same site. Otherwise, you don't get a fair comparison.

When I tested the two, it was two days apart from each other, a tuesday and a thursday. Same connection and same place, about 2 miles away from an AT&T tower. Which is why i dont understand that I used to get double the speed with my original Bold for 5 months, and this Bold 2 I get half the speed for about a week now.

It is a Snow Leopard thing. I noticed the same thing. I get the same speeds on Windows 7 with the 9700 as I did the 9000. I haven't tried the 9000 with my Mac.

Well somebody needs to figure this one out, because on my iPhone i used to get 1.2 mb/s down and .7 mb/s up. So something is messed up. I tried using the 9000's bluetooth files and no luck. I use tethering all of the time for work and school, and if I cant get this resolved, I'm forced to go back to an iPhone of all things... With this 9700 tethering, I cannot even view the smallest of youtube videos without my connection either failing to continue a download of the stream, or letting it buffer for about 3 minutes before i can start watching a 30 second video. This is ridiculous.

Using Speakeasy Speed Test I got 2.491mb/s down, 346kb/s up.

Is that with Mac OS X 10.6? Or is that with windows, or 10.5?

lilquaddrummer, how were you able to tether using 9700. I recently switched from 9000 to 9700 keeping the connection setting for att the same yet the connection fails every time. I get the following massage:
"it is possible your blackberry is an older model that does not have built-in modem capability"

Do you have a mac? If so, what is the model number and os number? I have a 5,1 MacBook Pro running 10.6.2. I am also running 5.0.0.405 on my blackberry 9700.

Yes. I also have a mac pro running 10.6.2 and a blackberry 9700 running 5.0.0.405.

I have successfully found out how to tether my blackberry to my macbook pro, however sometimes it will not connect as a modem until i reboot the computer. Happened to anyone else?

In reply to the guy that switched to the 9700, you have to download the new driver. I have found it just by google searching.

I also use dto get great speeds on a bold BT tethering to my mac i am now using the app tether i paid for and speeds stink i will try via bluetooth but i have a feeling they will be slower too. I will report back.

I have tried downloading multiple drivers. I have 6 different drivers that I have tried in order to boost my speeds. I went back to my iPhone 3Gs and I am getting 1.7 down and 300 up. It has to be the 9700 itself.
