Question need help understanding my memory usage??

Please Login to Remove!

Hey everyone, so I've been doing alot of reading and following JC's how to guides, but I don't understand how to figure out where my memory is going.

Here is what is says under my status:

File free: 5640824 Bytes
file total: 50462720 Bytes

then when i click on database sizes it says only 8903.2 K

So if my database is only taking up 8903K shouldn't I have that minus my file total as my "file free" EX: 50462720 - 8903000 = 41559720 Bytes as my file free.

Also i thought these Pearl's came with 64mb of total file why am i only showing 50mb???

My device is Pearl 8130 VZW 4.3.0.60 (3.1.0.32)

Thanks everyone for your help.
Jim

the database sizes dont include application or OS file usage. what applications and themes do you have installed. Also, do you have a media card? if yes, make sure all your pictures are stored on the card, same for ringtones, music, and videos. http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...-logs-sms.html

Welcome to the forums, Jim.

Your file free is VERY low - 5.6M will cause negative things to happen to your device, like lost email, call logs, and SMS messages.

A few questions:
- Do yo have a memory card for pictures (and other media)?
- What 3rd party applications do you have installed?
- How many themes do you have installed?

And 1 very important question:
- Have you done a battery pull (remove battery while device is on and put back in after 30 seconds)? If so, what is the File Free after doing this?

This sounds odd....something is eating up that space.

Just to confirm.....If you remove your SD card, can you still view all your pics on the device?

remove the media card and browse your media player just to make sure. there has to be something taking up that much memory.

First, do you have Pics or Media stored on the device memory? Do you have a media card and is everything off the phone? Are you properly closing the applications or are you leaving things running in the background? Use Alt + Escape to see what is running if there are more than the base five applications running there are extra's. Always use menu>end (or Close) or Escape to exit application and not the red end key which will place it in the background where it will eat memory.

make sure you check the media section fully, voice notes, ringtones, music, videos, etc. (i have seen a video that was moved to device memory for some unknown reason on a customers BB).

This could easily eat up 5+M, depending on what your camera quality settings are.

alt+escape shows running apps. you can also use menu > switch application to show the apps that are running. when the phone is idle you should have 5 running, phone, browser, address book, home, and BB Messenger. Either use menu > close to close the app you are currently in when you are done, or press the back key (sometimes requiring pressing back and holding it)

Hold down the ALT key (under the ZX key) and then click the Escape button (button with the arrow right of the trackball). Should get a 'task switcher' in the middle of the screen.

Continue to hold the ALT key so that it stays visible, but use the trackball to scroll to any 3rd party apps. You will always see Messages, Browser, Blackberry Messenger, Call Log, and the Home icon - can't 'close' those. But if you see anything else, go into that application and then use the Menu button to Exit or Close the app.

what if the 3rd party app doesn't have a "close" under its menu is there a way to kill it like the windows mobile phones have?

What application are you asking about? If there is no close, there should be an Exit.
