I've read there is a way to get tmobile certificates to unlock the UMA capability in ATT branded phones, but the links have been taken down apparently. Are there currently available links or unlocking services that will allow my 8820 to use tmobile's UMA/wifi phone service? I have the @home service through tmobile. I bought this unlocked phone off ebay, but didn't realize the nuance of UMA unfortunately. I'm willing to jump through a couple of hoops to get to the engineering screen etc., but apparently I need the tmobile certificates first, I believe.

Additionally, would uploading the latest software for the 8820 *from T-mobile* help, hurt, or do nothing? I believe I could try this, but not sure of the benefit.

It's not possible by any legal method. UMA service availablity is derived from the Vendor ID of the device, which is not legally modifiable.

Interesting answer coming from the wild west of Afghanistan. I'm guessing if we arrested everyone who had done something illegal on the internet or with digital devices, we'd have more in prison than out. Those laws are simply put on the books via payoffs and lobbying. Large gap between illegal and immoral when laws are bought and paid for. Do you think if we had referendum that over half the U.S. would vote to make changing the name of the phone you bought punishable by imprisonment? I think people would get a chuckle out of that one if it ever were up for a vote. So who votes these laws in? Bought and paid for politicians.

The 8820 is ancient. If you can find out how to hack it to get UMA on it (VERY DOUBTFUL) then go for it.

The software required to make the changes required to activate UMA on an old-ass device like the 8820 was stolen from RIM and its usage is trackable, so I'm simply trying to save you from getting into trouble.
