Tommyboy, were just a bunch of excited Crackberrys trying to anticipate what may be coming next. Information will come and go and will more than likely change some more before it's all over. We can all be glad that new stuff is coming but exactly what remains to be seen.

So when you say UMA and WiFi that means no EDGE? When will the carriers have UMA?

It's quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, in addition to the Wi-Fi and UMA/GAN. UMA/GAN basically allows for you to seamlessly switch between a normal carrier network and a Wi-Fi connection (or HotSpot or whatever) without dropping your call or data connection. It's really quite nifty. T-Mobile is already testing this in various markets (I believe Seattle was their first rollout) and should be offering the service by the end of the year (and broadened by the end of 2007), if I remember correctly.

Maybe its just me (i have a truely unlimited data plan) but i dont really care too much for wi-fi. I mean its great if you are in a hotspot and you want to browse the net faster, but edge has gotten to be pretty darn good for my use. I think it would be more of a hassle to worry about finding a hotspot.

I know that in my store HPs with wi-fi dont usually sell due to that reason, its usually becuase of the windows mobile it runs off of.

The real people who will gain with this device are the people who dont want to pick up a larger data plan or work in enviroments were they can hook up to a hotspot (free of charge).

Anyone feel the same way?

What will be the modem possibilities when you are on wi-fi, but then again, doesn't do much it you have to pay to connect to the wifi and can't use your unlimited data plan.

I agree with Stinsonddog. Reguardless though, it looks like a great looking device, blackberrys have really had a "wow" factor since the 8700.

not sure if streaming would be an option, but downloading an actual video would be one. since video playback capabilities will be included, it really just depends on the media player's ability to do streaming. i'm with you, i don't think it will be available, but that's not to say it won't be in the future.

According to the updated spec the 8800 will have a wi-fi and a camera... sweet huh? This is def my next bb :D oh and it should come out on Spring of 2007

Jibi, even if we were able to unlock the media player for the 8700 with the release of 4.2, how would that really help us? Unless you are planning on watching very short movie clips, listen to only a few mp3's, or somehow stream, we really need the exandable memory to make it functional on the 8700.

No.

The WiFi will enable the 8800 to be on the corpoate WLAN and utilize VoIP or SIP back to the Corporate phone system. You can extend your desktop phone to your 8800 while you are on the campus and the minutes will be FREE. Granted you need other hardware to make it work, like a SIP Enablement Server connected to the PBX.

WiFi is a great enhancement to the 8800 vs the 8700 IMO, too bad I've had my 8703e for a week now.

depends on the person. i don't store mp3s on my phone and listen to it as a person media player; same goes for movies. i'm a videophile, so i'm very picky about how i watch movies... watching it in 320x240 on a phone would be rather boring to me. but hey, that's just me.
