OK, call me silly if you want but I just can't figure out what's the aim of the button on top of the Pearl, the one with the speaker. It's like a sleep mode, OK. But what's the use? How does it react when somebody calls? ...
At the moment I use autolock to lock my phone after 1 minute and/or I activate silence mode manually. Am I not as a BB addict as you

Ooh, it does quite a lot of things Thanks for the information. So I suppose you are not using the silent profil or lock keayboard features but instead use that button that does both?
When you say "shuts off the screen", I suppose it's the same thing as the option "backlight timeout"?

It will turn on mute during a call which is why it is called the mute button.

It also puts your phone in standby mode which conserves power and prevents accidental key presses. I use it all the time.

You will still get alerts for calls / texts and hitting the mute button takes the device out of standby instantly.

EDIT: Is there a way to automatically enter standby mode?

On my 8100 it is also used as a pause button, not sure if that is the case with your model. If you are playing music or videos with the default player, it will pause them.

I am having issues with the mute button. The last two days when I push it ... it goes into standby mode ... but for only about 10 seconds. Then its right back to normal. Can anyone help?

Shut off the device. Remove the battery. Wait 30+ seconds. Reboot.
