Question Best place for "emergency" text

Please Login to Remove!

I want to find the best and most obvious place for my ICE (In Case of Emergency) files (physicians, medicines, attorney, etc.) on my 8300, and the best I've been able to come up with was this:

Media > Menu Key > Explore > Media Card > and once there,

open folders
  • Attorney
  • Physicians
  • Rx
I had no problem transferring the date to those folders as .txt files; however, the navigation seems awful convoluted and non-intuitive, hardly what I want in an emergency situation.

Surely there has to be a better solution. I'm exploring adding an I C E folder to my main screen, but don't know how to import icons.

Any ideas?

you should add it to your Address Book as Company name "ICE" which is where most would look for that type info, according to what I have read about the ICE threads in the past.

Likewise, you could enter the info under OWNER at Options > Owner.

Both good options. I do like the idea of an Icon for that, but it would have to be theme-created and dependent I imagine.

Isn't ICE meant to be for emergency personnel to identify information they should/need to know?

I don't think they are going to go through your folders, media card, etc seeking that information.

You're better off with a medic alert or putting a piece of paper in your wallet.

I agree with this. There's no way anyone is going to be looking all through your phone in an emergency to find various documents. I believe the ICE idea was to put a phone number in your cell phone's address book stored as a contact named "ICE". That way they know exactly whom to contact just by calling ICE. I think this is what people know to look for, but I could be wrong.

If you have a power of attorney or other documents, it's probably best to keep something in your wallet. That's what I do with my medical power of attorney. Even though it would be nice to have something available for people to see who all my doctors and attorneys are and to see my prescriptions and other information, I just don't think it's practical. Even if it had a big catchy home screen icon that said "CLICK ME IN CASE OF EMERGENCY" I wouldn't rely on that.

Maybe I'm missing something, wouldn't the device normally be locked requiring a password for any operation? At least with our BES policy it would be. I would recommend if you want to make emergency contact info available, to enter it on the Owner section in Options so it appears on the screen even when it is locked.

Yeah- I agree. I consciously omitted this argument because some people don't lock their blackberries.

It's a problematic and unrealistic idea from the get-go. I think the discussion is pretty much closed on that.

You can always put the ICE info on your Owner screen, that way, when the device is locked, it will be displayed. You should be able to fit most of the really important stuff there.

Yes - ICE is intended to be implemented as an entry in your phone / address book.

Only problem I found was that my wife's name sorts alphabetically after "I". When she calls me, I see a call from ICE coming in. With my T-Mobile MDA and MS Voice Command, it actually announces, vocally, that I have an "Incoming call from Ice"...

I too have had that problem with the address book. I wonder what way it could be fixed?

What I did was put the phone number for ICE under a non-phone number field so that the BB wouldn't recognize it as a phone number but a human would. Or I guess you could put the emergency contact's name there (or both).

I use my health card. Anything happens it's the first thing paramedics will go for. I suppose those of you south of the border don't have that benefit though.

True, but we do have cheaper data plans.

That's true...most people who use the ICE method probably don't password-lock their phones. I put "In Case of Emergency call:" on my lock screen.

True, but we have free health care...I may not like $40/month for 7megs of data, but I do like not having to pay anything if I go to the doctor or get in an accident.
Given the choice, I'll deal with data prices

Yep. Whenever I see someone complaining about Canada's data prices...I want to say exactly that. I can't imagine a single person who would rather deal with American healthcare costs over Canadian data prices...

Solution: enter "@ ICE" and it will "sort high" in the ASCII sequence and be first.

I think having the ICE message on the lock screen is an excellant idea. I'm setting mine that way right now.

I think that's what is already happening...i.e. his wife's name starts with something after "I". He could take your suggestion and use it for the wife's name so that the caller I'd finds her name (such as "@Samantha") before "ICE". At least that's my understanding of the situation.

I personally would try to leave the ICE entry alone. People should be able to find it in the phonebook and adding an ASCII character to the front may do more harm than good. Just IMO.
