Smile Blackberry 9930 reliability

Please Login to Remove!

Greetings Blackberry forumites! I have a question. A very high number of Verizon blackberry 9930's we have purchased have had to be returned to Verizon for warranty replacement. Usually it has been it shutting off.. and just displaying a red light.. wont turn on, computer wont see it. And then just today, I had 2 blackberries reboot, and then freeze at the progress bar screen. Weird that I had never seen that issue before then it happens twice in one day.

I was wondering if its Notifylink, which we use as are email client on the phone causing the problem, or if this has been happening in the 9930 community at large. Also, I believe Verizon pushed out the os 7.1 update if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for reading, and any input is much appreciated.

Are your users letting the battery drain below 20% on a regular basis? If so, that will damage the battery and could be one of your problems.

OS 7.1 is indeed available and you may wish to first upgrade the devices having issues before going the warranty replacement route.

I haven't had any 9930's go bad, but had a couple 9850 Torch's from Verizon seize up and have to be replaced.

What version of the Nofity Link client is on the devices? Also, is it compatible with OS 7.1?

Thanks for the replies! It's Notifylink version 4.8 in one instance at least. And, no looking over their website 7.1 isn't listed as being supported. 7.0 is which is what the 9930 shipped with, thus my suspicion. Unfortunately downgrading isn't a option once it bricks.. JL commander wont see it, desktop manager wont see it, although I have found a 7.0.137 OS for the 9930 to download.

Thanks again!

DM does see it, but you have to use loader.exe, not DM...they may be bricked or just nuked. Some can be revived back from the dead, albeit mine couldn't be.

The 99xx series seems to have some issues with this. I lost one already to bricking...(actually my wife did), which explains it. LOL

How sure are you about this. The way I always had it is that you must drain the battery totally before charging it again. For charging it from lets say 20%, it builds up "memory" and thinks it only has battery space from 20-100% ?

Um, no...
That was correct for batteries from several years ago that had memory. New batteries don't.

Well...as stupid as it sounds, I saw my wife brick her 9900....and it happened from a charge when the levels were so low the radio was off...(normal for her). It may or may not have been the root cause...but that's what I saw. Of course, she can brick anything without even trying.

this may be overkill on the battery question but it offers reasons why keeping a LI battery full is important.

Actually - better off a bit less than full...uses fewer complete charge cycles AFAIK...

I can't believe that simple battery charging issue caused so many BB's to brick.
Was this addressed in 7.1? Hopefully battery management (when the battery goes below certain level, it changes settings to reserve battery)?

Like my 9700, antyime it goes below %25, you never know if you have 1 hour or 1 minute, most of the time it just simply shuts down without further warning, other times it will disable radio.. In some cases it will disable flash when there is %30 battery left..
Weird!
