Default 8320 set up etc help please....?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi

Please help!!

I've been given a Blackberry Curve (very generously) by a a friend.

I'm trying to set it up principally for testing.

When I follow the instructions n the forum it seems to lead me into e mail accounts ( for texting ...why..?)

I've laded the disc on the co,computer but all attempts to set the phone up with on line instructions end up going round in circles and (as usual) the instructions bare little resemblance to what's on the set.

I wiped all the previous owner's accounts etc off the phone now.

I think there are two types of e mail used BES and BIS....and I need the non business one?

Whats is meant by a "carrier"?

Any tips here would be gratefully received!

TIA

David

PS I use a netgear router and with Orange(ISP). I see Orange will include me on the tariff for an extra 5 pounds a month. Must I pay this to get started? I pay 20 as it is which I think is more than enough.

Wlecome to BBF.

Thread moved to a more appropriate section.

What exactly are you trying to do - and what "instructions" are you trying to follow? Are you trying to reload the OS?

Carrier is your cell carrier.

You will need a BB data plan from them to get any of the BB functions, email, BB browser, etc. This is over and above the voice plan and replaces any other data plans and yes, you must pay for it, just like we do.

Most likely you will need the BB Personal Internet Service - BIS.

Thanks for the reply Dubdub.

This might explain my lack of success.

I'm trying to get the phone to text...as a minimum...anything more would be nice.

The instructions are the quick start guide, tips, and getting started guide that came with the set. Its good they were included but minimal help in reality as most of the bits are in different places to those shown.

Yes I think I need the "BIS"....how much will I need to pay for this. If its a lot I may have to question it.

Thanks again.

David

Please do not hijack another user's thread. It is bad manners to do so. You should start another thread int he appropriate section with your problem. If it is suspended, there isn't anything you can do.

Have you activated the device with your carrier?

Because it is a used BlackBerry you should check to see if there is an IT Policy that restricts text messaging. Options > Status and type BUYR (don't worry that there is no place to type it - just hit the keys) and you will see three new lines at the bottom of the list. The last one should be IT Policy and should read "Disabled". That would mean you have no Policy on the device restricting services.

Once you have a valid SIM card installed the very least you should be able to do right away is phone calls and text messages, as long as your plan includes text messages. Everything else requires the BlackBerry tariff.

You need to contact the cell phone service provider (Orange if that's the one you are using) and ask them for the BlackBerry Data Plan/Tariff/Bolt On. And yes, you typically will need to pay extra for it. They will tell you how much it is although you indicated that you already determined that it is "an extra 5 pounds a month".

Any advances on this?

Can we at least get the thing to text?

With respect, Mr. Blackberry, this gadget would appear to be a waste of every body's time.

i.e Does not do what it says on the box.

I'm now rather questioning my acquaintances generosity in giving it me...

(even the supplied cd causes my pc to crash)

Just in case I haven't already it made it clear, the phone is using a payg sim, in case it makes any odds to anything.

Confirm with whoever provided the pay-g SIM to ensure that texting is included?

Its a thought....I didn't think there would be a question about it.

I see Vodaphone are are doing a deal offering a data plan till the end of June free, then 5 a month taken of your sim credit.

I might just try that. I spoke to a guy tonight who was extolling smart phones virtues, so I'm still tempted to give the project a punt.
Any comments re the Voda phone offer would be welcome.

Apologies for getting a bit cross earlier. I wasn't expecting any new bills which I seriously don't need. It didn't' help matters that the disc was such a pig to run up.....and the set-up instructions seemed to be a road to no-where. When you're dealing with new kit it shouldn't happen like that....but in my opnion only .

Thanks for the thoiughts so far.

Perhaps the BlackBerry is not the right device for you.

Maybe its not.

Researching the suject today I was not a little surprised at the amounts beng charged (and presumably paid) for mobile phone usage. Do people spend all day on them or something?

Mine is theoretically for emergencies only.

Yes, lots of people do just that.

But if you don't have a need for it, then no use paying extra for something you don't need.

No.

Curiously I met someone the other night who was extremely enthusiastic about them. It mad me wonder if I'm missing some thing[or shouldgive it a try}. Anyway I've hooked up with vodafones PAYG BIS system now so eventually I'll be paying 5 a month and we'll give it a go. If it doesn't get used I'll can then drop it. I do think there is something to be said for keeping up wit new developments, especially in terms of communication.

So, we'll see.

Apologies, again, for being narky earlier.
