Default Japan, South Korea, Singapore & Vietnam

I'm new to the forum so apologise if this is in the wrong place.

We have a BES server in the UK and recently I've had a colleague go to Vietnam and then onto Japan. He has an 8310 device.

He had to manually set the network in Vietnam and then we couldn't get it working in Japan. A search of the internet showed me that that model doesn't work in Japan so now I need to purchase a new Blackberry for him.

However I need to ensure that the new Blackberry works in Japan, Vietnam, South Korea and Singapore (ideally the whole of the Far East). From searching through this site it looks like the 9700 model will do this but I wanted to check to see if any of you can confirm this or suggest a better alternative.

O2 has a service locator on their web site and I input Japan and it returned a positive for coverage. The 8310 is GSM so maybe a call to the carrier would help.

Almost everywhere in the work uses GSM networks and O2 has agreements with well over 424 of them in nearly 200 countries! Are you going somewhere special? Have a look at our guide to see what service you will be able to use - International coverage - Travelling abroad - International - O2

I don't think the 8310 will work in Japan, only the newer models, i.e. 9700 have the specific frequencies needed. Or the 8707 will.

Agreed , it may be a frequency issue but I could not find any list of supported BB's

It may exist but I could not find one.

Overview:

* BES Server and Domino Server are located in Melbourne.

* This BES server will also be service their offices in Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, United Kingdom, Ireland, USA and Canada.

* Each office will be purchasing devices in their local countries running that regions language pack.

Questions and Answers:

1. Will the BES be able to handle emails and document written in other languages e.g. Will the Attachment Server handle Japanese word documents

Japanese characters with the attachment service is possible with BES and handheld software 4.1, provided that the device has the full Chinese language pack installed. 4.1 are fully Unicode compliant from the BES side, so the parsing of attachments will be ok. Japanese devices will presumably be supplied in country by DoCoMo, if so, these should come pre-installed with the full Chinese language pack which includes Japanese characters, if not bear in mind that only the 8707 is compatible with Japanese UMTS networks.

Not true (re:8707) now that the newer BBs such as the 9700 is out and about. Plus the Japanese networks have open up a little as well.

The 9700 definitely works in all of those countries.

Thanks for your replies.

I'm going to get a 9700 as everyone seems to agree that it will work.
