I have a query.

When downloading a file from The App World or email attachment, I have noticed that the download rate is intermittent.

There are bursts of speed and then a wait of about a second or 2 where there is the waiting clock symbol and then the download continues.

Is this because of the buffer being filled up or is it based on the network.
I have noticed this occurs on both 2G and 3G networks.

Any help would be helpful

It really depends on your connection, the device you are using (processor and memory), the distance to the tower and tower congestion.

Ok well wherever I am and on both 2G and 3G bands I have experienced this.

As noted in my profile, I am using the curve 9300.

If you are referring to the processor and memory as being a possible cause, does the 9300 not have good processing and memory capabilities?

Those are the usual causes for a problem such as yours, I didn't say that it was the problem. As for the 9300, 624 MHz processor but only 256 MB RAM, sort of the "middle of the road" device IMHO.

And it is a combination of the things I listed, not generally any one of them.

The thing is, I have used all sorts of cell phones and I have never experienced this. Yes in today's market the blackberry 9300 would be a "middle of the road" device. But I have used far older devices and they have all downloaded files off the internet at a constant rate albeit a bit slower due to lack of 3G support.

I have asked people who own Blackberrys like the 8250 and the Bold 9700. They are different networks and all experience this periodic pause in their downloads.
They shrugged it off as saying it's normal.

Yet I have experience in networking and cell phones to know this is not normal.
It seems to only be limited to blackberrys as my Sony Ericsson downloads the exact same file just fine and it's got a weaker processor and less RAM.

Does this make sense?

Blackberry compress data, because it goes via their BIS-B servers.
Perhaps the pause is the compression.

That would make sense. I will look into that and see if I can find any information regarding that

I have still not been able to find information about this. Does anyone else have any other experience with this issue?

I see this ALL THE TIME - it was worse with AT&T here in NY but still happens on Verizon.

This is about carriers getting slammed without having the infrastructure to support it...

I wish I could pay them based on perfromance....!

Hmmm interesting take.
So Rhyalus, do you see this on the higher end Blackberrys as well.
Do you know if it's on BIS only or also BES?
