Default Bold and disabled PIN number

Please Login to Remove!

LOOONG story short..... bought a Rogers branded Bold off of Ebay...... was unlocked by the seller. I was NOT told anything about the device being a pre-release model as it was sent to me in a Rogers box, but after countless, countless hours trying to get it activated with AT&T it turns out that it is in fact a pre-release model, and RIM has the PIN number disabled. Do you think if was to call RIM and plead my case as the innocent victim that they might activate the PIN number for me? Short of that, I am stuck with a beautiful looking paperweight.

I'm afraid you may be stuck with that paperweight until such time AT&T releases the Bold for sale in the US. The general speculation is that RIM will release the PIN numbers they're currently blocking once the device is being sold in your country. I suspect you'll still have to ask.

You have recourse with the seller. He knew what was going on.

1. contact the seller
2. wait for it to be released on ATT
3. use it as a paperweight

Thank you all for your replies.... they confirm what a RIM supervisor just researched and told me..... they will not activate a disabled PIN for any reason whatsoever. I have already contacted the seller, advised him that it is illegal to be selling these phones, and he has agreed to refund all of my money.

I will wait (im)patiently for the official AT&T release.

All of the above being said, while I had the phone in my posession, even though I could not use the data part of it, what parts I did test out seem to be pretty darn awesome. Incredible screen, very decent camera, very nicely refreshed UI, very, very usable keyboard, and a great form factor. I can't wait to get a real one and start using it.

You should consider placing a negative review on that eBay seller's profile... someone else may not be as insistent as you when they get stuck with a brick.

I'd contact RIM as well. My buddy bought a blackberry off pearl that had a hacked pin. It had the same pin as someone elses device so they'd get each others email. RIM ended up giving both of them brand new devices.

I know its not the same situation but I'd give it a shot.

The seller has given me a FULL refund, and even paid for the shipping of the unit back to him. Truthfully, you can call me naive but I have a feeling this guy didn't even know he was selling pre-released units. He was advertising them as Rogers unlocked units, they came in a Rogers box, and he claims that he bought a bunch of them from a reliable 3rd party with no knowledge of the pre-released status. Whether he is full of bull or not, at least he is making good on the deal for me.

I tried like hell to get RIM to give me some love...... they cannot, and will not, activate a PIN on a pre-released unit. Period.

Agree with Cory on this one. Even *IF* on the outside chance a PIN was actually hacked (it would be the first I've heard of) then the encryption keys would surely be different, thus preventing the device from reading an email meant for the "other" device. I doubt the accuracy of this report too.

I forgot that RIM deals directly with consumers and individuals...

Wink

Update and Final Result: a) seller took back the unit and gave me a full refund. b) found a nearby import shop that had REAL, unbranded units directly from Blackberry. Bought one. c) within 10 minutes, it was properly and 100% accurately activated on my account, including my BES d) PROUD OWNER OF A NEW BLACKBERRY BOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Alls' well that ends well.
