Just wondering since I have a lots of animated gifs on my PC, not to mention the huge number of sites out there which have huge libraries of animated gifs if I could use these gifs as animated wallpaper on the homepage of the 8800?

Does the device utilize certain file types for this?

I doubt this is possible. Not due to a restriction of the OS, because my Purple Haze animated gif, animates in the picture viewer full screen, BUT in the homescreen its just static. Probably a power consideration,who knows.

a GIF file can be applied as a wallpaper but it will not be animated. I tried a couple GIF's a while ago and it just displays it as its first frame.

Does this also hold true for animated icons? Is it possible to have animated icons? I apologize if this is a dumb question but my boyfriend just got the 8800 and he is making a theme but wanted me to find him animated icons.

Not a dumb question at all. Actually get your husband to STILL source them, for the time RIM does support animated gif's or desktop photos'. I think its a great idea! Non ZEN themes with icons for data centric apps that auto fetch data in the background when it gets the data it needs, then the icon animates until screen saver mode engages OR launching or switching back to that application.
