I would hope that by the time the 8800 is released, they will have resolved that problem with the trackball.

Granted you need other hardware to make it work, like a SIP Enablement Server connected to the PBX.

WiFi is a great enhancement to the 8800 vs the 8700 IMO, too bad I've had my 8703e for a week now.
Correct IF they dont charge for wifi connection. And as i was givingn my opinon I have an unlimited plan, so for me it doesnt really matter. I am looking forward to the new form of the device but thats pretty much it. Wifi (just for me) doesnt make sense.

just my 2cents.

That is why you see so few devices with a Flash Player. With phones it is even worse, because they want money from the OEM to make the player for the device, and they want money from the service provider to provide infrastructure.

If you ever see Flash on a BlackBerry, it will probably be a Vodaphone, Verzion or DoCoMo exclusive, because those are the only operators I am aware of that have licensed Flash, and even then I doubt RIM would pay to have a player made for their OS.

One thing I think people are overlooking as a huge benefit of Wi-Fi is the UMA access it brings. I know lots of companies where they have the buildings covered in Wi-Fi, but cell phone towers can't penetrate the walls in the lower levels. UMA makes it so they can still dial out and use their phone as a phone with no tower connection.

That's a HUGE win in my book as T-Mo service sucks at my house, along with Sprint (I had an 8100, and now have a 8703e). In fact the only service that does work at my house, is Nextel. I don't get full bars, but 3 bars where the other phones get 1 or none. And in my basement at least I can carry a conversation without breakups with just one bar..

Anyways, UMA would cure all my ills in that area.

The other thing I think people overlook about Wi-Fi, is locations that have municipal Wi-Fi. There are entire cities where you will have Wi-Fi coverage.

Hopefully,
regardless of whatevers inside the 8800 will be sturdy and well built enough to withstand scratches and scrapes from just about every darn holster you put 'er in.

To me it looks like the side metallic like the pearl and it must be solid in someway to support its low profile.

Hopefully that will be good.

Quoted from somewhere...

"If you havenxxx8217;t seen the unreleased Blackberry Pearl 8800 then you're missing out. This beast of a Smart Phone is poised to set the standard for Blackberry devices sporting ultra slim form factor with full keypad and large 320 x 240 screen for optimized data input. Blackberrycool has managed up the some stats on the device - although its unclear if they're legit - and along with it a Spring '07 release. Expect a 1.3 megapixel camera, 5x digital zoom, media player - audio and video playback/streaming, stereo headset compatible, 64MB of memory expandable by MicroSD card, quadband EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, spearkphone and more. The new form factor will measure 6.3xxx8243; long, by 2.36" wide, by 0.6" slim."

The Boy Genius has his own website now, and he has listed pictures and spec sheets on the Indigo due out this year, and the Crimson which is due out next Spring. I am waiting for the Crimson...I think it represents what a true BlackBerry should look like, and has all the features I would ever want:

I am missing one thing. Other than being thinner (14mm vs. 20mm), the 8800 (114mm x 66mm) is essentially the same size as the 8700 (109mm x 69mm). Is the thickness that important to people? Why is everyone calling it "smaller"? I switched from the 8700 to the 7130c because it was much better as a phone: the keys are more accessible and you can do most things one-handed. Yes, you have to tolerate SureType (I don't mind it at all). But the wider form factor suffers from being harder to hold as a phone, and much harder to dial. The voice activated dialing will help that in the 66mm 8800, but there seems to be a 60mm wide version coming from TMO, which sounds like a more substantial improvement over the 69mm width of the 8700.

I am going to try the Cingular 8100 when it arrives; the 8800 as spec'ed doesn't seem like enough of an improvement over the 8700 to go wide again.

14mm vs 20mm doesn't sound like much but remember it's a 42% reduction in size, that's pretty substantial really for a new generation device that is packed with more features and functionality while retaining all legacy functionality.

I know the 8100 doesn't look much smaller then a 7130c in numbers, but hold the two in each hand and it becomes very obvious... You could easily throw the 8100 in your jean pocket, where as the 7130c would be a little bulky to do so easily.

Default Cost

Do we have a general idea of what the cost will be?

Looks like the Rogers update for the 8100 OS did fix the trackball/phone ringer issue so I would expect the 8800 to ship with this fix in place.

Not one person mentioned the fact that it will be GPS enabled as an ADVANTAGE over the 8700...

True that!

I can't believe boy genius procured an entire "website" just to speculate on this upcoming BlackBerry.

It's not that important to me, since cellphones and PDAs come out so often I can hardly keep track of 'em.

One thing I've always loved my Blackberrys and I do plan on upgrading to the 8800.

But then again I just now upgraded my 7290 to the 8700g last May. And that doesn't feel all that long ago, since it was literally at the beginning of summer and now the beginning of autumn, I have another "new" and "improved" Berry to cop.

Damn this quick progress...

Based on my past experience with the Treo (3 Treo 600s and one 650) there is no way I am going back to one of those devices, no matter how much I liked it. My 8700 does everything I need it to do.

O.K., no more Treos. But how about the 8800?

Why is there so much hype about Wi-fi? Is it just faster on the Web? I guess if your on the web a lot it would be very helpful.

I guess you can call it "harder" but it's certainly not "hard" for me to hold my 8700 as a phone and dial. Guess it's a YMMV (and dependent on hand size) matter...

Say you work in a large office building, or campus, where you don't get very good reception, but IT has set up a Wi-Fi network that covers the whole area. With a Wi-Fi enabled device now you will get perfect reception anywhere the Wi-Fi network reaches. Or say you live somewhere where coverage isn't very good. With a Wi-Fi enabled device, all you have to do is go buy a Wi-Fi router, and now you have 4 bars in your house.

I think that is one of the more compelling arguments for Wi-Fi.

Ahhh....thanks for that. That helps me to understand better. So, the wi-fi signal also applies to your phone service as well?

Thanks-Ron
