Unhappy Storm's camera

Please Login to Remove!

Any one else NOT impressed at all with the camera? I know its a phone camera it's not meant for real picture taking. But I would hope for it to take at least halfway decent pics. I have played with the settings between quality and pic size but it doesn't seem to help. There doesnt seem to be anything covering the lens, or anything on it. The reason I think it's someting with the unit is the video recorder isn't that grand either.....

Any one else having issues???

That's a picture that I uploaded onto flickr just this afternoon. Its so... pale. or dark...

Its sad, for a 3.2 megapixel camera!

If you cant see it... well, I'll upload it somewhere else.

After looking at your image, it looks amazing.

My settings were as follows:

Default Flash Setting: Automatic
Image Stabilization: Off
White Balance: Automatic
Picture Size: Large (2048 x 1536)
Picture Quality: Superfine
Color Effect: Normal
Geotagging: Disabled
Store Pictures: On Media Card
Folder: /Media Card/BlackBerry/pictures/

Are there higher settings?

And no, I didn't edit the image. I'm just here trying to figure out if there's a way this camera can take better pictures.

Sorry, I have tried the higher settings to no avail... I have tried the image stabilization as well I guess it helped but not sure.

Settings are as follows:
Default Flash Setting: Automatic
Image Stabilization: Off
White Balance: Automatic
Picture Size: Large (2048 x 1536)
Picture Quality: Superfine
Color Effect: Normal
Geotagging: Disabled
Store Pictures: On device memory

when i first got storm it would take pic about 15 seconds after i hit button AND the quality was pure crap. Since os update sna time has sped up but still not that instant like on pearl curve or bold. My pics come out with washed colors. never look good at all. they never look crisp either. To be honest this doesnt feel like a 3.2 mp camera. more like a 2mp phone camera. i think its total rubbish

I found the Storm's camera to be excellent, considering that it it "just a phone camera". I use it for taking pictures of houses for real estate listings. You may want to fiddle with the settings to adjust the camera functions to your tastes, however.

Can someone figure out what the settings should be for the BEST quality that this is capable of?

While this may be disappointing, there are no "best settings" for the camera.

What there are is settings that are appropriate for different lighting settings.

The "White" setting is equivalent to White Balance settings on real digital cameras. This setting is the most important setting on the camera as it adjusts the color balance of the camera for specific lighting situations.

For example. if you are shooting indoor under fluorescent light, but this setting is set to Sunny, the picture will come out with a green tint. Relying on the automatic setting is questionable.

Try to stabilize the camera by bracing it against something fixed. This is particularly important if you have the image stabilization off. Any motion will result in a blurred picture, particularly under low light or indoor conditions. Shooting outdoors in bright sun is likely to give the best results.

I am surprised that the camera is not the same as that found in other BB models, but who knows what drives these decisions. GOod luck 73

Default impressed

I must say that I am pretty impressed with both the camera and video. one thing you may want to check is the zoom. If you slide you finger up and down on the screen, you will notice it zooms in and out. it will go from 1.0x to 2.0x depending on your finger slide. I suspect that if you've mistakenly slid it to 2.0x or closer, you will get a less clear picture than at 1.0x.

Question camera switched to 640x480 and is stuck there

I was testing some picture quality and had taken 3 or 4 indoor pictures. I turned on stabilization and full time flash. Then turned them off. Ever since then, I get nothing but 640x480. I have tried changing the resolution on the camera to other settings and back again with all pictures just stuck at the same crummy resolution. Any idea what has happened? I guess I'll try a reboot grrr.

Yep... I pulled battery and now got my resolution back. this looks like a problem. if it happens again I'll update and then file it with RIM.

I think the issue I had was a device issue. I swapped phones with an unsuspecting end user and my camera works great now..

Default Re: camera

So far this is the best camera on a phone yet for me.

I have had these camara phones.

sayno 5300 ---> first camera phone in the us. about 12 years or so back.
ppc6600 --> 1.3 mega pix, it sucked mega pics
ppc6700 --> 1.3 mega suxs
ppc6800 --> slightly better 1.3 mega sux
ppc6900 --> same 1.3 suck'z

iphone 3g --> so so pic's, not sure the mega pixels

g1 google phone --> another htc phone and the same ol so-so in bright light / crappy er than crappy in slightly dim light.

BB Storm --> 3.1 mega pix, solid in day or dim light.

Come on folks, its a phone with a tiny camera / sensor. There is a new technology coming out in the coming year or so, that will quadruple the quality of the tiny sensors. I cant remember the name of the company, but it was posted in engadget. com

Just my 2.5 cents.

The camera on the Storm is sub par.
Previous two phones were the enV 2 and the Dare, both with outstanding cameras.

Problems with the camera are:
WB auto mode does a poor job
Camera takes way too long to take a pic, even after I've adjusted all the settings.
Picture quality is less than ideal for indoor pictures. Pics taken outdoors tend to be "ok".

The Dare's camera took a pic nearly instantaneously and had cool features like panoramic photos and photo editing.

Granted, this is a BB/smartphone not a camera, but even with the 3.2MP lens, the camera firmware is less than desirable. Hopefully they have a fix in the works.
