Hi everyone, just upgraded both BES servers to 4.1.5 and I noticed there is a monitoring service.

I would like to configure this and use it as a basis for a POC (I am trying to get Boxtone here but I have to provide some other options as well).

Can anyone give me any feedback on the monitoring service? Does it work well? What types of things are useful on it and what is useless? Does it hinder performance on the BES? Any things to be wary of?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Dont use it yet... but I'm gonna evaluate after 4.1.5 installation.

That's enough information for me... so would you recommend Boxtone (I want to get that installed here, it looks pretty fantastic)

BoxTone is an excellent product--I would definitely recommend it.

I am pushing for it but the business wants a POC for Boxtone and other products similar to it. (I had a demo at WES, it's excellent no doubt)

u have no problem with a budget ...i can tell,eh?

I demo'd the product as well... You can even admin from your own Blackberry .... nice!

Yah, budget is always an issue... but the amount of calls it will reduce and the insight it can give our call center, IMO its a no brainer.

The Monitoring Service is half baked, at WES they touched briefly on the next version and it sounds a heck of alot more useful then the pie chart report maker it is now.

Everything is up to you to define thresholds which would be nice if I knew every threshold or had some guidelines for said thresholds. For now I have it running on a box and it's nice to get historical CPU/Memory trends. For audit type reports I still use berrystats as the top 50 canned report doesn't do anything different. Definately don't install it on your BES as you won't get proper monitoring.

In this space it's tough to beat what zenprise / boxtone are doing right now. But as commented you need some budget which in the current economy is tough to convince your CIO.

i wanted something just to alert me when certain things were down such as the srp and this is perfect for me. all i was looking for was a way to detect these things faster rather than having the help desk call saying 400 people were down. we don't really do reporting. if that's all you are looking for then this should work great for you as well.
