Multiple Folder redirection...does it make a difference?!

New to the forum and found some of the information invaluable. I'll lay out the scenario and then ask the question!
We have 2500 exchange users and 250 BB users. The exchange users are split over two servers and we are seeing very slow perfomance from exchange which some are blaming (maybe rightfully) on the BES.
So, to my question... we have several users who have multiple folders redirected to their Blackberry...some have up to 60 folders! Does this effectively mean that each folder redirection is acting as a normal 'Blackberry inbox'? Does the BES server aggresively check every folder in the same way it would normally check an inbox? If it does then you could be (potentially) impacting the exchange server in a far greater way than the suggested 1BB user to every 5 exchange users.
Thoughts please...
