No Faith In 8830
Please Login to Remove!
I have no hope for the 8830 anymore , this device takes ages to have an os released similar to the gsm phones which are released like 6 months before. This device doesn't even have an official 4.5 release yet. I seriously hate this $*#&! My alarm sometimes doesn't work. The sound doesn't come on but the screen does pop up and it says dismiss, or snooze, completely useless! Nearly got fired because of this! It is so slow, it always has the loading cursor every 4-5 seconds! I sometimes can't play any media at all (sd card and device), I AM SICK OF THIS! What do you guys think of this *%&$ device? Are you (8830) owners feeling me or is it just my "bad" luck?

No. I get lockups with VIIGO but that is still listed in beta. The product may not be able to compete in certain ways with the Bold but it does is thing in the 8xxx world

I loved my 8830, if the 8830 had the amount of memory my Curve has I would have kept the 8830 forever! It just seems to be a lot more sturdier then my Curve.
You are running a beta (4.5.0.101) so everything should be ok. There isn't much difference from Beta to official other then someone giving it the thumbs up. You could try a different version of the beta.

I like mine. The only issue I have is that it breaks when you drop it in the toilet or on the tile floor. I guess that's not really RIM's fault though. the toilet issue was fixed under warranty.... I am a business customer with may phones with my provider, they take care of me. The floor issues resulted in dropped connections when I'm tethering, nothing else. I can get that run under warranty also, but I'm thinking on getting a Storm.

Yeah.
I think your issues could happen with any device.
I will change it as soon as the next set comes out (Javelin or Niagra)

It's a telephone - geeze. It works. It makes my life easier - it handles my email, my texting, and a few other things - It even has a GPS so I don't get lost (at least in the US). What more do I want it to do? It's a keeper.

It is a phone, but it is a pretty expensive phone. It should not perform like my brothers palm treo. I have noticed something, Everytime I upload a new os, it works fast - until like a week, it just, well, dies! I thought that it might be the disk space problem, but I have plenty of space. Could I be doing something wrong? And what is with my alarm and media player? It should not be a hardware problem should it?

I am a little disappointed in mine. If only it had the memory of the Curve, it would be just perfect. I love the keypad, and the overall feel of the phone. I just hate the memory leak, and lack of memory.

Ditto, I feel the same way. I think the 8830 is a much more solid device them the curve (build wise) if only it had the memory to survive.

A reliable phone
I use my 8830 both personally and professionally everyday. I use group texting, group emailing, I use the Bolt beta browser, the BB Browser, Viigo, Facebook, Twitterberry, and Google maps on my 8830 regularly. I have a 4 GIG microSD card loaded with media and my internet speed with Sprint is above average. The password keeper keeps me from losing my sanity with passwords and I have five active email accounts that I use daily. The phone does not have a camera but that was a feature I chose to opt out of as I visit work locations where camera's are not allowed. The device is very sleek and sophisticated looking in it's appearance. The addition of the Bold theme in blue adds to this very slick look. I did purchase the eOffice program for my phone but that was a total let down and so I wasted money there. So do I hate my device? Absolutely not! It is still relevant and I do all this running the 4.2.2.196 operating system. Have a good weekend everyone.
Update: I didn't mention in the orginal post that I have been happily and productively using my BB8830 WE since August 2007?

I'd consider myself a heavy using (Viigo, Opera, Texas Hold 'Em Kings 3, calendar events going back a year, 3 email accounts, etc, etc) and After I removed CODs as instructed by JC's sticky post I never lost a single message. I even had 4.5 running for a little while.
Really it's a solid phone, but not for everyone that is why we have alot of choices for BlackBerry, Curve 8330 with increased memory, Storm with a Touchscreen, Bold with 3G. You just gotta get a BlackBerry that fits your needs.

I have the Verizon 8830 and can't stand the blue backlight on the silver keypad. Since it's a company issued phone, I cannot swap anything. That's my only rant.

I too am disappointed in Verizon's lack of a new OS for the 8830. I've been running the betas, but clearly they have not been without their own issues/bugs.
I recently bought my wife an iPhone, and as much as I hate to admit it, I have iPhone envy. Although not perfect, the device just plain works well, its browser is top notch, and the user experience is unparalleled.
My Verizon contract is up in May, but I'm eligible for a discounted phone upgrade in 2 days. My Verizon options are:
- Upgrade to a Storm. But I've tried the Storm, and it is no iPhone. And I'd be locked in for another 2 years.
- Upgrade (downgrade, actually) to a Curve, which has the camera, more memory, and better OS support from Verizon. But again, locked in for another 2 years.
Or I could go back to AT&T, jump on a family plan with my wife, and...
- Get an iPhone; still don't like the touch keyboard though. And the current iPhone may be nearing the end of its product lifecycle.
- Get a Bold; but user experience still falls short of the iPhone, and it's pricier.
Although I prefer Verizon's network over AT&T, there is a tremendous cost benefit for me by going back to AT&T: I get 30% off the regular monthly cost of voice and data plans, due to a discount arrangement I have via my ex-employer.

I believe it will be the new Bold or a hybrid of such

Can't really blame VZW, no carrier has released an Official release of 4.5 for the 8830.
