Torch no longer working on Windows 7 (driver error)

AT&T Torch with latest software loaded.
I've had this Torch connected to my Laptop with Windows 7 working for a few months now with no problem. Now all of a sudden when I went to connect it, in the Windows device manager, I see the yellow exclamation point next to the 'Blackberry Smartphone' under the USB controllers section. I took my Torch and connected it to my home PC with Windows 7 (I've had it connected there before too, but never had the device manager software or desktop manager or device software installed on that system, I just let Windows find the right driver for it. All I was doing with it at home was accessing the memory card to transfer files back and forth.
Anyway, on my work laptop that this is no longer working on, I have had the following software for the BB installed all along:
- 9800M_PBr6.0.0_rel2342_PL6.6.0.195_A6.0.0.526_AT_T .exe
- 501_b084_english_nomediamanager.exe (Desktop manager 5.0.1 - so I can still use the sync certificates function)
- SMIMESupportPackage-17.exe
What I've done so far trying to fix it is...
- Uninstall device software from laptop
- Uninstall desktop manager from laptop
- Reinstalled device software from laptop
- Reinstalled desktop manager from laptop
After the device software was uninstalled, I tried to let Windows find the right driver to see what would happen. It found what it thought was the right driver but it still wouldn't work.
When I right-click on the blackberry in the Windows device manager, it says Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date. The only difference I noticed between the driver it's using on my home PC versus the one on my laptop is the driver on my home PC seems to be from 2007 but the one on the laptop is from 2008.
I noticed this error message in the 'General' section when I right-click on the BB in device manager and click on properties and I think this is the key to the problem. Any idea how to resolve?...

The latest version doesn't have the certificate sync function does it? I was hoping to keep that ability. Worst case is I guess I could install certificates manually via the micro SD card?
That pages on the MS site points you right back to the Desktop Manager R6 download site on BB.
I did just now install the R6 desktop manager software and it works....but I don't know why it just stopped working suddenly with desktop manager 5.0.1. It worked fine before. My only issue is syncing certificates with R6 desktop manager but I may be able to get by with doing it manually. I do need to use encrypted email here at work.
