Unhappy 8700 Back Light Timer

Is there any way to prevent the 8700c from going to sleep when out of the holster? The max time in options is 2 minutes.

A co-worker has placed it in his old cradle and likes to keep it on all the time (while powered) and neither of us can figure it out.....or if it is even possible.

No, it is not possible.. I know people liked those sprint phones which are always on while connected to BB. Why would you like to have the light on ?? are you trying to read something on the BB, if so then if you click any key or wheel before the timeout (2 min in your case) then it will stay on. If you are looking at it to see if there is any new mesg then you will get that indication by a blinking RED light.

Default it is useful

If you want to see who email messeges without having to switch screens it is nice to have the screen on all of the time. Some users I know use it as their only email application...even when it is attached to their computer!! I don't, but to each his own.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could add a profile setting under Messages, so that when the unit is out of the holster and a message arrives, it turns on the backlight?!

There's a possible hack --

You can download BBLight software (not sure if this works on the 8700). There's an option to activate the backlight upon external power. But untethered, this could gobble up battery life like no tomorrow though.

This may be the solution to your issues though;

This is why they should have kept the screen TRANSFLECTIVE, you could leave the screen on without having the backlight on. Simple as that. They have high resolution Transflective LCDs on many PDAs that aren't much more expensive than teh BB 8700. Too bad they changed the screen.

If you use PocketDay, you can have it activate the backlight when a new message arrives

Yes, BBlight basically works with the 8700, but once BBlight is installed, the backlight remains on constantly. Whatever option I use, the light will not go off, even though it is only supposed to stay on as long as the BB is charging (I liked the working option for my BB 7290, because while in the car, the BB was constantly on, and I could read incoming messages without having to switch it on). Any ideas or workarounds?

I had the same problem on my 7100i until I checked only the external power optionin BBlight. Now it stays on when on external power and operates as usual in other situations.
