Ahh, I see now: the outage was not important because it only affected the peon BIS users, not the corporate BES users.
so Now I am a peon becuase I dont need BES appriceate the insult

just a simple text message saying "Hey you are not getting e-mail right now ...working on the problem...check back later. thanks RIM." would have been better then nothing.

I voted for "not mad at all." While I'm not mad about it I do wish RIM would somehow come out and state that they are aware they have an issue, they don't know what it is and they don't have a time to resolution. It would just help everyone, including the carriers who have to take 8 million calls when something happens.

That being said, the BB, BIS, and BES systems are all VERY reliable and it's hard to complain (though some feel the need to.) It needs to be kept in perspective. As one poster above put it, my power has been out more often than my BB service. It's the best push email system out there and is very reliable.

Not very happy, I dropped my 7130e and it broke so Aliant gave me replacement for 250.00 which is pretty cool but I can only use it as a cell phone till RIM gets things fixed so I can setup email on it, can't log new phone in for this. Blah

I voted "Not Mad at All". I'm an IT Engineer and, to put things in perspective, if I was able to keep the rest of my IT environment as reliable as the RIM service has been over the years, I might be my company's CIO right now.

My environment is obviously no comparison to RIM's environment and even with all the redundancy, we have the occassional unplanned outages during some of our implementations. It's not always that easy.

I don't know how RIM or their providers would setup the communication, but the issue may get compounded even more by sending out a mass communication increasing volumes to the relative customer service desks. People would then complain that "I was on hold for over an hour trying to reach customer service".

Just my humble opinion. Trust me, 99% uptime in the technology area makes RIM a winner to me.

I'm willing to give RIM a pass on this outage. The previous one was only 7 months ago, but I'll chalk this one up to coincidence/bad luck/shit happens. Last time I thought, "Hmmm. How odd. Never heard of this before." And I figured it just shows no one is immune to errors. We were all so used to RIM's reliability it was almost as if their service was based on some alien technology and was truly bulletproof. This last outage raised an eyebrow for me for sure, but I'm very interested to find out what the cause was. If this is at all related to the last outage RIM better have a backup/redundant system in place pronto. Another outage in the next 6 months or so and the foks at RIM start looking like a bunch of assclowns.

I do wish there would have been some kind of notice...or...something indicating a problem. I was starting to think MY blackberry was having an issue. When I called Verizon, they told me what the problem was. Of course, if RIM was able to send us messages saying they're down, then they wouldn't have been down! So...what're they supposed to do.

I dunno...not a major deal to me, just a minor irritation.

Default outages

Hell, I'm an electrician for a U.S. Naval base and if we only had two power outages a year I would be thrilled!! Except for less overtime

They're inexpensive. Make sure you get the kind that have what they call "guaranteed delivery" - this is where the pager sends an acknowledgment back to the network that it actually received the message - some paging networks don't do this, so they transmit the message, and if you don't get it, you're SOL.

Anyway, those are the only devices that I have ever worked with where I have never seen any downtime.
Can someone confirm, I think SMS messages are guaranteed within the network for delivery? If that's the case then a Blackberry can still be used, but procedures need to be in place to use an SMS message to the person's phone directly rather than by an e-mail. I did some research once and you can connect certain "GSM radios" directly to a PC with a SIM card to place it "on-network" and send pages directly by GSM & SMS which would avoid a number of possible breakpoints like e-mail gateways and things like that.

I should also mention that if your life-or-death e-mails are going out to a person on a BIS account then someone could die within the 15-minute push timeframe window. That just doesn't sound logical to use for anyone in need of timely cmmunications regardless.

Default Sorry for the stupid question....

But is it me, or is it down again? I hadn't gotten any notifications at all today about e-mail and , being the junkie I am, I kept checking on my BB for new messages - none. Then I logged in to my e-mail account off my desktop to find 3 new ones waiting for me since early this morning. I'm using BIS, but no notification. What gives?

I've been receiving all morning on BIS, AT&T. Tested my receiving just now from my POP account and it is working.

BIS + T-Mobile is working for me - receiving new messages within 10-15 minutes of arrival as usual. I recommend calling your provider at this point, or trying some of the tips listed above by other users.
