Arrow Knowledge Sharing - Enterprise Transporter Setup for BES Domino

Please Login to Remove!

Just sharing my support experience so far.

When installing on a seperate computer for the Enterprise Transporter for BES Domino, you require:-

(1) Lotus Notes client installed, launch at least once with the last ID switched to an Administrator's Notes ID that belongs to the Domino group "BlackBerryAdmins".

(2) Ensure that the Administrator's Notes ID has permission to create database and replicas on the destination BES Domino's server. This is a Domino permission that if not granted will break the replication of the user's State database from the source to the destination.

(3) Ensure that you can ping/telnet over port 1433 to the SQL servers that host the source and destination BES servers' BESMgmt databases.

(4) Prior to the user preview, ensure that:-

On the source BES
===============
- All BB services are stopped.
- BES add-in task unloaded.
- Leave the Domino server running

On the destination BES
==================
- All BB services are stopped except for the 2 BlackBerry Administration services. The 2 services are required to be started.
- Leave the Domino server running.

(5) Lastly, perform a Domino console command "trace" from source BES to destination BES and vice-versa to ensure that the servers are talking to each other.

Now you are ready to go transporting your users. Enjoy!

Adding more stuff for a more complete checklist as there are a lot assumptions made to the previous one:-

On the seperate computer where you are about to install the Enterprise Transporter, verify that:-

(1) Lotus Notes client installed, launch at least once with the last ID switched to an Administrator's Notes ID that belongs to the Domino group "BlackBerryAdmins". This is because, be default, this group is granted Manager's access to the BlackBerry User Profile NSF and BlackBerry State NSF files. Hence the ID used needs to be a member of this group.

(2) Ensure the Lotus Notes install can be detected. Complete the following steps:

1. Verify the location of the IBM Lotus Notes installation on the host computer.
2. Go to Start > Control Panel > System.
3. Select the Advanced tab and then click Environment Variables.
4. Add the installation path identified in step 1 to the end of the Path variable in the list of system variables.
For example, add one of the following file paths to the end of the Path variable.
;C:\Program Files\Lotus\Domino
;C:\Program Files\Lotus\Notes

(3) Ensure the Lotus Notes install can be detected. Complete the following steps in the Windows registry:

1. Click Start > Run and then type regedit to open the Registry Editor.
2. Look for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes key.
3. Make sure the value for Path and the value for DataPath are correct for the location where the program files for IBM Lotus Notes are installed on your computer.
4. Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes key. There are subkeys for each version of Lotus Notes installed on your computer (for example, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Lotus\Notes\7.0).
5. Make sure that there is only one subkey for the version of IBM Lotus Notes used with the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
6. Make sure the value for Path and the value for DataPath are correct in the subkey.
7. Close the Registry Editor.
8. Start BlackBerry Desktop Manager again.

(4) Ensure that the Administrator's Notes ID has permission to create database and replicas on the destination BES Domino's server. This is a Domino permission that if not granted will break the replication of the user's State database from the source to the destination. Check these settings in the source and destination Domino BES servers' server document in Domino Directory.

(5) Ensure that you can ping/telnet over port 1433 to the SQL servers that host the source and destination BES servers' BESMgmt databases.

(6) Ensure that the Windows account that you login to the computer are granted the SQL access permission on BOTH the source and destination SQL servers BESMgmt databases.

(7) Prior to the user preview, ensure that:-

On the source BES
===============

- All BB services are stopped.
- BES add-in task unloaded.
- Leave the Domino server running

On the destination BES
==================

- All BB services are stopped except for the 2 BlackBerry Administration services. The 2 services are required to be started.
- Leave the Domino server running.

(8) Lastly, perform a Domino console command "trace" from source BES to destination BES and vice-versa to ensure that the servers are talking to each other.

Remarks: Unlike the Exchange ET, as you can see Domino's ET has 2 level of access permissions to take care of - i.e. Domino + SQL. Hence, ensure that all above are checked is essential for a successful user migration.

Updating thread to provide more useful information from a good colleague of mine.

You can edit the EnterpriseTransporter.exe.config file to have the below options.

(1) If SkipDominoBBSDReplication is set to True in the EnterpriseTransporter.exe.config file, during the move of the user, the BBSD (State) database WILL NOT be replicated to the destination server.

(2) If SkipDominoBBSDValidation is set to True in the EnterpriseTransporter.exe.config file, it WILL NOT validate if the Note.id is able to open the BlackBerry profiles database in both source and destination server.

(3) If SkipDominoBBSDReplication and SkipDominoBBSDValidation are not present or are set to False, verifies that the selected IBM Lotus Notes user.id can open the BlackBerry profiles databases in both the source BlackBerry Domain and the destination BlackBerry Domain.

Default Answering some offline questions

I have some questions posted to me off this thread when the parameters should be used, here they are below:-

(1) If SkipDominoBBSDReplication is set to True in the EnterpriseTransporter.exe.config file, during the move of the user, the BBSD (State) database WILL NOT be replicated to the destination server.

Remarks: This is used when you want to cut down the time on the replication of the BBSD (State) databases from the source to the destination BES server. Of course prior to migration, you need to perform a OS copy over of these databases to the destination BES.

(2) If SkipDominoBBSDValidation is set to True in the EnterpriseTransporter.exe.config file, it WILL NOT validate if the Note.id is able to open the BlackBerry profiles database in both source and destination server.

Remarks: Personally I will not want to use this parameter as I want to troubleshoot until there is no Notes errors. I can then be very sure that the Domino portion is working fine.

BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter (BET) performs TWO (2) validations

(1) Global Validation
xxx8226; BAS is installed in destination BlackBerry Domain
xxx8226; BES User Administration Tool that host the BET

(2) User Validation
xxx8226; In the IBM Lotus Notes client that host the BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter
xxx8226; User account is associated with a valid email address
xxx8226; Account does exist in the source BlackBerry Domain and does not exist in the destination BlackBerry Domain
xxx8226; IT Policy can be applied to the BlackBerry Smartphone
xxx8226; In IBM Lotus Domino checks if the state database in the source domain can be opened, marked for deletion, and does not exist in the destination domain

I am still not clear on the reason for the need of the notes client on the Machine. I can only presume it is there purely for an authentication mechanism to the Domino server domain.

What format and where must the SkipDominoBBSDValidation be placed? I am still to date grossly horrifed by RIM's documentation on some of the highly important information, all they is place it in the config file if not present. An example of a working Config posted here would be greatly appreciated with any relevant points highlighted.

I am finding it hard to believe that the BES Servers services have to be stopped, that wont fly with customers for any migration and is not required for the Exchange Transporter.

Notes client is a requirement since the transport for Domino replication is NRPC, very clear to me.

Have you read the BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter - Installation and Administration Guide - BlackBerry Enterprise Server Resource Kit at all?

2 links to address your concern.

Link1: Installation considerations - BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter - Installation and Administration Guide - BlackBerry Enterprise Server Resource Kit - 5.0.2

Link2: Validation that the BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter performs - BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter - Installation and Administration Guide - BlackBerry Enterprise Server Resource Kit - 5.0.2

All information can be found in it.

Yes I have read them... They reasonably useless for troubleshooting.

There is a section for troubleshooting. Not good enough???

Link3: Troubleshooting - BlackBerry Enterprise Transporter - Installation and Administration Guide - BlackBerry Enterprise Server Resource Kit - 5.0.2

I refer to them while troubleshooting issues. The rest are the usual logical troubleshooting as per errors encountered.

Update:

There are 2 mode of migration:

(1) Bulk mode - move all users at one go
(2) Live mode - limited to 5 users at one go

For Bulk mode, BOTH BES must have their Server Services OFF. That's a requirement.

For Live mode, Both BES must have their Server Services ON. That's also a requirement.

I thought in Live Mode you can do up to 20 users at a time.

Official recommendation? Could you elaborate please?

Taken from the BET 5.0.2 Installation and Administration Guide, see below:

One or more user accounts at a time

If your organization's environment includes more than one BlackBerry® Domain instance, you can use this option if users move to a different area in your organization and you need to move the user accounts to a different BlackBerry Domain. You can move these user accounts in live mode.

I don't see anything stating the max number of users unless it's written in secret white ink...I think RIM need to revise their documentation.

From our tests, we can only move 5 users at a time in live mode.

Matches the offical recommendations in the software tool itself, isn't it?

True, I did a little bit more research on this and it is in fact 20 users in live mode. (Can be modified in the config file but will probably impact performance)

Exclamation Update

Addition information added from a support experience added on point (8).

(3) Ensure the Lotus Notes install can be detected. Complete the following steps in the Windows registry:

(7) Prior to the user preview for Bulk mode migration, ensure that:-

On the source BES
===============
- All BB services are stopped.
- BES add-in task unloaded.
- Leave the Domino server running

On the destination BES
==================

Comments: Ensure this by checking that there is Connection document created in the Domino Directory to link in the source and destination servers.

Additional Information:
