Bignewt didn't appear to be using the same definition...I was just saying that him calling Mark's description a leak didn't match up for me.
Your description (memory lost and not recovered w/out non-standard steps like pulling the battery) is what I would call a leak.
I think you and I are in agreement.

i've monitored the status every day, and the 8130 doesn't seem to leak as bad as my 8830 did.. so i'm happy that i don't have to pull the battery out every second day like i did with my 8830.. but i do notice over a week or so, it does slowly get to <1mb..

I guess I'd report the opposite. While neither requires a hard reset often, my 8830 would go weeks without needing one. Its memory leak was much slower than my 8130. I haven't pushed the 8130 to see how far I can go with it.

I've previously reported that my memory would go down, bit by bit...not so much a leak, but more of a drip. After a battery pull, my free memory would go up to somewhere around 13-14 MB, and then over the course of a few days it would drop down to as low as 8 MB, with some fluctuation in between. Someone on Howardforums had suggested that Opera Mini is the culprit. I suspect he is correct. I had Opera Mini on my Pearl, but never really used it (I had gotten used to the Blackberry browser). I decided to delete Opera Mini from my phone, and ever since then I have not seen any appreciable drop in the memory at all. Strange thing is that even though I wasn't using the Opera Mini browser, the memory would go down over time. Since I deleted it, the memory would go down as I start using things like sending email, sending IM's, etc. by maybe 10-30k, but then a few hours later, I can check my memory status and it would be back up to the memory amount before the drop.

Maybe you have discovered the secret! Most of us have Opera Mini. But whatever happens to the memory nothing goes wrong with the phone, at least not our 2.

Hmm... it's possible I'm experiencing this memory "leak," though I haven't spent enough time with the phone to be sure (five days). I have noticed though that my emails and SMSs disappear all the time without me deleting them. The options has it set for 30 days delete, but I don't even have all of today's emails still in my email box.
I have Texas Hold'em King 2, Facebook, ESPN, and an aftermarket theme loaded. I also have 9 pictures saved from the camera, and I do not have a microSD card in place.
Is the onboard memory really so small that it cannot even support the above list of downloads and storage?

You have to go into options then status and check your free memory.

No, not at all, Pull the battery off with the bb on for a few minutes and you should get some memory back.

And you really shouldn't save anything to your phone memory. Get a microSD card (they're dirt cheap nowadays and you can find a 1 gig one for around $20-25) and move your pictures to there. The phone only comes with 64 MB of physical memory, and the OS plus your apps will probably take up somewhere around 50 MB of that.
I noticed when I first got my phone and activated it, loaded Yahoo IM, Google Talk, and Opera Mini and my memory was down around 7 MB. Once I did my first battery pull (leave the phone on and remove the battery, wait about 30 seconds or so and then put the battery back in and let the phone reboot), I was back up to over 13 MB. Even with my memory down around 7 MB, I never lost any emails.

To add to this if you delete the themes and languages you don't need or want you will save some memory, I also deleted the pics and ringtones that came with the BB. Oh and the sample videos.

How did you delete the preloaded pictures? They are locked on my blackberry and I can't figure out how to unlock them.
Also, where can I find the different language packs to delete?
When memory is low, the dreaded hourglass will continuously spin until the unit is reset. I have been using a free program to reset the blackberry without having to remove the battery every time (it is called SoftReset).
I have noticed that over the course of 1-2 days, available memory will decrease by at least 4,000,000 bytes. My free memory was down to 2,000,000, and after a soft reset, the memory is back to 6,900,000 bytes free.

I got my 8130 the other day and I removed the language packs, the suretype packs for legal, medical, etc... I then proceeded to remove the Dimension Icon theme as I never use it. After that I deleted all of the pre loaded wallpapers and the demo video. Currently I have just under 15MB of free memory on the device. I'm still looking for ways to increase the memory by a few MB. If anyone has any suggestions please post them. Thanks!

You might want to look at this thread...sounds like you've done a pretty good job, but it might provide some additional ideas. It includes a couple of scripts to automate the task, which is nice...if you try to use the scrips, you need to open them in notepad and change occurrences of 8100 to 8130.

Im new to Blackberries and have a 8130. Shouldn't $500 smartphones NOT have problems with memory? Love the phone though, puts my previous phones to shame

Maybe the 8130 uses more memory than the 8100. I also deleted just the language packs and the 1 sample video (I have Opera Mini, a few extra themes, 2 extra map programs, Berry411, some other stuff). I have 29mb free after a pull. Out of the box the 8100 has about 14mb free. I don't know what the 8130 has out of the box, somebody could check and see.
EDIT: I just checked my wife's (doesn't pull her battery, about 2 months old). She has 19mb free, Opera Mini and Berry411. So I don't think hers "leaks". Maybe it just gets to a certain level and stays put.

When I received my 8130 it had 14MB free out of the box. I deleted the language packs and what not then installed a few third party apps, a couple games and 2 ringtones and within a few hours it showed as 9MB free. I wiped the device and reloaded the OS and installed my third party apps, games and a couple ringtones and my onboard memory was just under 15Mb free. (I also deleted things like the Help option and Brickbreaker as I don't use either of those). My device will usually dip to 10-11MB during the day then stop there. My total file memory is 50462720. I had a couple memory issues with my 8320 nothing major but I am hoping I don't lose call logs or messages with my 8130. I back it up often and always clear logs and delete messages I no longer need. I hope RIM increases the onboard memory to at least 128MB if not more with their future devices.

If you don't use your help file you can delete that. Might give you a little.
