I currently have a Blackberry Pearl, and just purchased a curve 8520.

My problem is this. The port on my Pearl is fried, which is whyt I had to dump it. And I never downloaded my contacts to my laptop.

I need to use the web on my Pearl to somehow download my contacts to a site, then import them into my 8520. I tries gmail, but it won't let me download the program to the Pearl.

Is there a good website that you recommend?

If you have all your contacts saved to your GMail, you can use Google Sync to sync them to your phone. Works great. Give it a try.

hmmm... if the Gmail solution wont work (as you wrote in your post), does TMo have some kind of back-up assistant or some cloud based backup?
I was in the same situation a year back when my curve port came loose.. Here is what i did. Attach each contact to an email (or two...depending on how many contacts you have.. ) and send it to yourself.
Then you can save them on your laptop; then sync with your curve.

Cumbersome yes, but it worked for me.

Other than this method, perhaps one of the other, more experienced folks can weigh in with an alternative.

With BIS, I thought you can now backup your contacts wirelessly to yahoo now. Check that out.

Went over to their site and discovered I had set up an account as some point in the past... three devices ago!
Syncing now (even though I use BES/wireless sync/Outlook for contacts) just to re acquaint myself with it.

So your on a BES? Most companys do not allow this type of information to be stored on a third party server. Hope your IT department never finds out and places a restrictive IT policy on the BB.

The m:IQ sync picks up only Outlook contacts and calendar entries. It also picks up the pictures/videos that live on my sd card. NONE of the messages in my outlook (BES) inbox or any other proprietary data was sync'd.

But just for grins, this morning I called my IT folks and asked them to take a look at the app and let me know if I need to remove it. I for one prefer to approach issues in this manner rather than 'hoping' someone doesn't find out. It also helps them keep up to speed as they have other, daily, more pressing issues... outside of and in addition to their BES admin duties. I will report back...

So... I spoke with my IT folks. They said that they have the appropriate ports blocked.. and combined with the multi level secured protection of the domain, no proprietary data can be accessed.
Uh.. yeah.. whatever all that means.... Bottom line is m:IQ is only allowed to access my Outlook calendar, address book, and multimedia items on the device. No Outlook email data. Interestingly, it doesn't pick up/sync any BIS info either.
Ok..so Spare me the flames if I misspoke here or misrepresented the technical summary, as this port/domain stuff is CLEARLY not my forte. But you get the gist... MY IT guys are cool with the m:IQ app and it does what it should: backs up contacts, photos, videos (that reside both on the device and on the sd card).

Not to be too spammy, but if you download m:IQ it will backup your contacts (and other data if you want) to a private account. Then when you get your new phone you just download the app again and sign in to get your contacts ect. onto new phone.

by the way. Just noticed over the weekend... that if you have m:IQ set to "automatic" sync, it tends to really eat up battery life.. rather significantly. Or at least it did for me. WOW. Be mindful of that setting.
