Default Do you need internet plan for wi-fi access?

So say my phone has "wi-fi." Do I need to add the internet plan to get the wi-fi access or no? What if its my school's wi-fi or say my own home wi-fi? It would be nice to not pay $20-30 for internet if I hardly use the internet.

You don't need the internet plan from your carrier for your WiFi to work.
Could you please confirm if you really have the BlackBerry Pearl 8100?
B/c if you do, that thing doesn't have WiFi. Only the 8120.

You won't get email if you don't have a BB dataplan.

Right, you can just log on to any network that will allow you to. But getting an internet plan will allow you to connect to the internet from more locations.

Is there any difference in performance between the two, does anyone know?
