From what I've heard, the unofficial word is that it drops with AT&T Mobility on the 27th of this month.

I understand that, but the 8820 is just an 8800 with wifi. I'm wondering if the os would load to an 8800.

I have been hearing that too from AT&T reps at my local stores. They have been saying end of the month and late August. So I guess, I will be patiently waiting until then.

Are you serious, that's crazy. I guess RIM could change it. Why doesn't changing the OS to the UK one change the keypad?

You can load any 8820 OS on any 8820. It doesn't change the keyboard It's hard-coded to the device.
