Exclamation Sim Unlock Tool

Please Login to Remove!

Came across a SIM unlock tool in the BlackBerry Technical Knowledge Center. Not 100% sure exactly what it does or how it works, but the name was too promising to pass up. If you know more about it, speak up.

Tested it on my (already unlocked) 7290; connects to bootrom, writes a bunch of stuff, and the device reboots.

A friend with a locked 7230 is testing it as I type.

App says:

RIM 2.5G Wireless Device MEP Fix Tool Version 3.7.9.1
Copyright 2006 Research In Motion Limited

If that really is (C)2006 I have a sneaking suspiscion that it was not meant to be out in the open...

OK, the results from a locked 7230 are..... network still locked :(

No idea what it does, but it doesn't remove a network lock....

If you start the app with /? you see that one of the options is -w for password... I suspect that you STILL need the network subsidy password to unlock it...

The -w option allows you to put the BlackBerry password on the command line so are not prompted for the BB password when you run the program.

This was in the password protected RIM Support web site (obviously not THAT secure) and I'm not sure what they actually are supposed to do.

That is the exact same thing it did to my BlackBerry 7100t.

I tried it on an unlocked device and it didn't do anything nefaroius like re-loced it. It didn't do anything on a locked 7290 (that I can tell).

Just so everyone knows, I do not have access to any secure RIM site. The company I work for does have TSupport accoun,t but I am not one of the 5 people who have access. I found these links on the Public Technical Knowledge Center > New Documents. Both files were listed plain as day.

New document listed now about the SIM Unlock Tool. It reads...

What Is- SIM unlock tool to correct SIM unlock issue
Last Updated: 19 January 2006
Article Number: KB-04783
Summary

This article applies to the following:

* BlackBerry® wireless devices manufactured between November 3 and December 15, 2005
* GSM, GPRS, and EDGE networks
* Carriers using a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) unlock code shorter than 16 digits

Details

A change to manufacturing software tools affected BlackBerry devices for the GSM, GPRS, and Edge networks built between November 3, 2005 and December 15, 2005 for service providers using a SIM unlock code shorter than 16 digits. The SIM cards for these devices cannot be unlocked using the standard SIM unlock tool.

To correct this problem, a new SIM Unlock software tool is available. A BlackBerry user with an affected device can download the tool. After the tool has been downloaded and run, the SIM card can be unlocked using standard procedures.

Downloading and Running the SIM Unlock Tool

If you are using the BlackBerry 6700 wireless device™, download the file SIM Unlock Tool Serial BlackBerry.zip.

For other devices, download the file SIM Unlock Tool USB BlackBerry.zip.

1. Contact your service provider to obtain instructions and the SIM unlock code for your device.
2. Download the appropriate zip file for your device from BlackBerry.com.
3. Extract the file and save it to your personal computer.
4. Connect the device to the personal computer.
5. Double-click the downloaded file. If prompted, enter your device password. The unlock tool runs, and the device resets when complete.
6. Proceed with the SIM unlock instructions from your service provider.

I asked RIMs T-Support about this tool today and they told me that it fixes an issue where some locked 8700 devices could not be unlocked using the Carrier-provided unlock code. In the coming days RIM will release a KB article describing the issue and telling how to use the tool. But I am still wondering why they are offering two tools, one for USB and one for serial. If it fixes only issues with 8700 devices the USB should have been enough.

d_fisher - no offense intended at all! I didn't even look in the Public information. I went straight to the T-Support section.

It took over 12 hours for someone to post it!!!

No offense taken. I just wanted to clarify where I got it in the event that RIM did post it publicly on accident.
