Default BB data access on Consumer Cellular

Please Login to Remove!

I have been using Consumer Cellular for nearly a year with no problems until I just bought a new bb 9530. I was told it should work being Consumer Cellular is using GSM network. I know they do not have the bb services, even so I should be able to access the internet with the normal GPRS service. Sounds all well but I am not able to access the internet and when talking to the customer service at consumer cellular they say BB and Iphones will not work on their network. Doesn't make any sense at all. I did some research on the net and see a few people who say they were able to configure their iphone to work with consumer cellular with no problems. But cannot find anything on bb.

Any Ideas what would be stopping access to the internet through their network and if there is anyway to get it to work?

I don't know about iPhones, but with BlackBerrys you must have a BlackBerry data plan to use any data services. The device needs to authenticate itself to the RIM infrastructure for data. Without a legit BlackBerry data plan you'll only get phone and SMS. That's how BlackBerrys are designed.

A regular smartphone gets data from your carrier.
A BlackBerry gets data from RIM through your carrier.

Thanks for the response rambo47, but as I have seen from other post I don't think this is true.

I believe if you use a non-blackberry data plan you can use third party apps but you would not be able to use the blackberry apps.

I am trying to find someone who could possibly let me know if the Consumer Cellular network is different than others and if they know a way to configure my bb to operate on their APN.

You can use Opera Mini to browse the internet without a BB data plan, but you won't be able to download anything. That's about it.
