I am starting to use the Backberry maps api in my Java app and it seems to work. However, there are very few options (position, zoom, rotation). Can I do other things such as change the position icon, prevent an marker position from being shown. Is there a way to control it in more detail? Thanks,

Likely, you have a listing of available functions in the API you're using. RIM doesn't release all of the API calls to 3rd party developers. That way, you can't make better toys than they do!
