Thumbs up The 8703e has GPS - I love it!

Please Login to Remove!

The news mentioning the BlackBerry 8703e are not less. The best thing is: it has a built-in GPS!

So there is already a program on the market supporting the 8703e: GPS Tool Supports 8703e

Fast ...

Remember that only Sprint/Nextell's will have GPS capability. Verizon's will not.

As far as I know, Sprint/Nextel promotes the GPS features and Verizon does not. I guess it is because Sprint/Nextel can offer "Assisted GPS" with their network which Verizon does not have. So the GPS would just be the usual Navstar GPS without the "assistance" Sprint/Nextel can offer.

I've also tried the demo version - and a registered version - and could not get it to find my location.

There appears to be a bit of conflicting info on the 8703e, some sites claim all 8703e's have GPS (the "A-GPS" assisted GPS) and some claim its only the Sprint 8703e that has it (or has it enabled).

I've sent a note to the tech support team for Spot to see what they say.

Are there any on GPS tools that run on Blackberry? even ones that just spit out your co-ordinates or the raw GPS data - just to see if the GPS is working.

From the Spot user manual:

2.1 Devices
This version of Spot for Blackberry is runnable on the Blackberry 7520 and 7100i using
their built-in GPS receiver.
Using Spot for Blackberry on other Blackberry devices (e.g. 7100, 8700 Series and 7250,
7290) requires an external Bluetooth GPS receiver.

I've been sending some email back and forth with the Spot developer and so far, he's indicated the GPS should be working, but it may take a long time for the GPS to pick up satellites.
I've given it over 2 hours and it still didn't pick up anything and I'm starting to belive that Verizon has disabled any user access to the A-GPS in the 8703e.
I'll let you know if I hear any more - in the mean time, I'm looking for a cheap bluetooth GPS receiver.....

I've found a bunch of programs that supposedly work with the Blackberry GPS - although most are designed for the 7520. None of them seem to get position information back form the A-GPS in the 8703e from Verizon.

What I'd love to find is a program that would just spit back the raw data from the GPS, without worrying about mapping, for the moment. That way we could be sure if this thig is actually working.

(I'm actually beginning to wonder if the GPS is working, but maybe Verizon has mangled the code such that it spits back latitude, longitude and altitude all equal to 0 - just a theory though)

Here are some of the programs I've tried:
  • HelloWorld (GPS) from www .handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&platformId=5&pr oductId=177468&R=177468
  • Spot from www .handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&platformId=5&pr oductId=177468&R=177468
  • WayViewer from www .wayviewer.de/en/index.html - never got that one to work
  • J2MEMap from j2memap.landspurg.net/

Other interesting Mapping Stuff
MG Maps - www .mgmaps.com/index.php - keep checking their news page, they are suposedly adding support for Bluetooth connected GPS receivers on Blackberry's
Google Maps for Mobile - www .google.com/gmm/index.html?utm_source=us-et-more&utm_medium=et&utm_campaign=gmm - No GPS support, but still pretty cool

Default 8703 gps software

Has anyone gottent the GPS software to work for the 8703? All I get are coordinates of 0/0 which places me off the coast of Africa in the middle of the Atlantic. I sent emails to the software developer but they don't seem to answer email questions/requests for support.

Maybe this doesn't work as advertised?

Anyone have any experience with this software?

Thumbs down 8703 GPS - Verizon won't enable A-GPS

I just spoke with Level 3 support at Verizon. Bad News.....Verizon has not enabled the use of location based services and they have no plans to do so. GPS is only available for 911/emergency use. I asked why they enabled that function in their firmware and was told that they have it there so they could possibly, maybe, use it, if they ever decide to make the service available. But at this time Verizon has no intention of making this basic built-in function available.

from what it sounds like, if we use the Sprint firmware (when it comes out) we can enable that function..

Ok, I'm thrilled Verizon finally added the 8703. I ordered today. Pardon the ignorance, but can you fill me in on the GPS capabilities? Will this allow me to stop using Neverlost in my Hertz rental?
